Antalgic gait: A painful gait that results in a limp as a person shifts their weight quickly off the injured or sore limb.
Ataxic gait: An unsteady, uncoordinated walking pattern characterized by a wide base of support and irregular, staggering steps. It is often caused by a problem with the cerebellum, the area of the brain that controls balance.
Propulsive (Parkinsonian) gait: Seen in people with Parkinson's disease, this is characterized by a stooped posture, short, shuffling steps, and an accelerating pace that appears to be "chasing" their center of gravity.
Spastic gait: A stiff, foot-dragging walk, typically caused by a muscle contracture on one side of the body.
Sc******ng gait: A type of spastic gait where the legs bend slightly inward and may cross or hit each other, resembling scissors.
Steppage gait: This occurs when a person has "foot drop," an inability to lift the front of the foot. They compensate by lifting the leg high, and the foot may slap the ground as they walk.
Waddling (myopathic) gait: A "duck-like" side-to-side motion caused by weakness in the hip and thigh muscles.
