So incredibly proud of my little client! He officially had his orofacial myofunctional graduation! We've been on quite a journey with this, and seeing the difference it's made for him is truly amazing. He's been sleeping better and even breathing better at night. I'm always thrilled to receive photo updates from parents of my past clients. This lovely girl has made tremendous progress, remaining relapse-free three years after completing myofunctional therapy. Her transformation is not just visible; she also experiences improved sleep quality, breathing, and a reduced risk of sleep apnea, laying the groundwork for lifelong optimal brain function and health.

This client was referred to me due to exhibiting signs of potential relapse following Stage I orthodontic treatment. His orthodontist recommended myofunctional therapy prior to initiating Stage II orthodontic treatment. During the assessment, we identified a low tongue posture and a tongue thrust swallow. In collaboration with our specialist, a diagnosis of a posterior-tongue tie was established, revealing the underlying cause of his orthodontic relapse. We implemented myofunctional therapy both prior to and following functional frenuloplasty, successfully retraining his tongue to eliminate the tongue thrust swallow. The treatment outcomes were truly remarkable.

Did you know that exercises targeting the muscles of the tongue and throat can improve stability of the airway and help prevent airway collapse during sleep?

Myofunctional therapy is a well supported intervention to help reduce snoring obstructive sleep apnoea in both children and adults, especially in conjunction with CPAP, surgery, or orthodontic treatments.

Here is a pioneering study from Brazil that examines the impact of specific exercises. The researchers used a camera down the nose and throat to see the impact on mobility, tone, and dimensions of various regions in the throat. This work contributes much needed understanding of how the exercises work, and provides insights into selection of exercises to improve outcomes.

A big congratulations to speech and language colleague Esther Bianchini and her team for their dedication to advancing this field and improving outcomes for so many! 👏
