How to run a fast 1 mile race:
-Running a fast mile is different from a 5K or a half marathon, so I recommend a different preparation routine.
-First, you’ll need some extra warm up time.
In longer races, you can use the early miles to warm up and get loose.
If your race is just 1 mile, you need to arrive at the start line aleaady warm, maybe a bit sweaty and ready to go, from the gun.
Jog around a bit—maybe a mile or more, do your stretches, loosen up those joints and get ready to go.
-Second, Don’t start too fast.
Pace yourself during the first quarter. Don’t try to lead the race, unless you can run in the 5 minute range.
That is especially true in our race. We start with a big downhill, so I would say RELAX in that first quarter mile and just focus on your breathing and maintaining a steady cadence/foot turnover.
Few things suck worse than starting too fast and then trying to hang on for another 3/4 of a mile. (I have made that mistake, before.)
-Third, Take advantage of the other racers. If there is someone going about your pace, try to key on them. Hang off their shoulder and use the “push me – pull you“ method to maintain your rhythm.
Find your happy place.
Embrace the pain, because it will hurt, but it won’t last long.
A mile is short, so the event will be over in just a few minutes.
-Fourth, At about the 3/4 mile mark, you can go. Just go.
Even if you get short of breath and tired here, you’ll be able to reach the finish, so just gut it out until you get there. There’s a small downhill in our race, at about the 0.8 mile point. Just before the last left turn, you can go and let gravity help you across the line.
-Next, Run all the way through the finish line.
High-five and fist bump everyone who finishes around you.
Cheer for the folks behind you.
Get some water and enjoy the post-race events.
-Lastly, Hang out afterward.
Cheer for and encourage the other runners, kids and walkers as they go by.
Grab a breakfast burrito and enjoy the live music.
