DID YOU KNOW WHAT NUTRITION COULD DO FOR YOUR PREGNANCY?

Preventing Gestational Diabetes: Women who eat diets high in fiber, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains before and during pregnancy have a 22-34% lower risk of developing gestational diabetes. Conversely, diets high in fried foods, fast food, and processed meats increase this ris

Reducing Preeclampsia and High Blood Pressure: Healthy dietary patterns—particularly those rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and fish—are associated with lower rates of preeclampsia and gestational hypertension.

Preventing Preterm Birth: Good nutrition can reduce your risk of delivering early. Diets characterized by high intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, and dairy products are associated with lower preterm birth rates. Balanced protein and energy supplementation in women with undernutrition can also help prevent preterm delivery.

Supporting Healthy Birth Weight: Multiple micronutrient supplementation and balanced nutrition during pregnancy can reduce the risk of low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age babies. In fact, comprehensive nutritional interventions could potentially prevent millions of adverse birth outcomes worldwide.

Have a history of high risk pregnancies or simply wanting to prevent complications? Rachel Hutto is certified in maternal and infant nutrition and works with women from preconception through babies first two years of life to start families off on the right foot!

Epidurals - Good or Bad?

Are there risks and downsides? Yes!

Are there benefits? Yes!

When might an epidural be helpful?
- Very long labors where mom is exhausted. Allows mom to rest and get some sleep.
- Baby’s position is not ideal and progress is slow, allowing mom’s body to relax and allow progress.
- Lack of birth preparation or support (mentally, physically and emotionally)

What are some downsides of an epidural?
- The epidural may not work (Numbing sensation can move up instead of down. Numbing sensation on one side and not the other.)
- May cause severe spinal headaches that require you to lay flat for days and receive a blood patch.
- May cause nerve pain for months or years afterwards.
- May become less effective the longer it is used.
- May slow labor. (The brain may no longer recognize the body is in labor and will slow oxytocin production leading to fewer contractions and the need for synthetic Pitocin. Pitocin can lead to slower heart rate for baby and possibly c section.)
- Disconnection from your baby (removes the ability to be upright and moving and feeling the best positions for you and your baby)
- May cause low blood pressure.

If you plan to get an epidural, consider your coping strategies if it fails, and consider waiting until labor has started on its own with a good strong labor pattern to prevent contractions from stalling.

If you plan to avoid an epidural, consider your coping strategies and when you might consider changing your mind due to long labor and/or baby position.

Epidurals are a tool! Doulas are a great support whether you plan to have an epidural or not. You may plan for one and not be able to get one. You may not plan for one and end up changing your mind! There is no wrong answer.

Do your research and consider your options. EBB article is linked in the comments.

Did you use an epidural? What was your experience?

Not sure what to eat for breakfast? This crustless quiche recipe from Lily Nichols, RDN is delicious and easy!

Not sure what to eat for breakfast? This crustless quiche recipe from Lily Nichols, RDN is delicious and easy!

I developed this crustless spinach quiche recipe when I was living in a remote area with an extremely short growing season making fresh produce hard to come by for the majority of the year..It uses frozen spinach (a whole 10-oz bag!), giving you a hefty boost of folate first thing in the morning — not to mention all the protein, choline, and other key nutrients in eggs. Find this recipe in Real Food for Pregnancy.
If you live in an area where "fresh" produce isn't so fresh, don't feel bad about relying on frozen. It's picked at the peak of the season and the vast majority of the nutrient value is preserved when frozen.
