Just harvested Echinacea and Yarrow flowers. If you keep picking Echinacea flowers, they'll keep coming all summer long. We do not harvest the root of Echinacea until it's at least 3 years old. It's medicine is then strongly concentrated in the root. You can tell by placing a small peice on your tongue and chewing. You'll feel a buzzing, tingly sensation on your tongue due to Echinacea's active medicinal compounds. Many folks don't know that the flowers also contain these active compunds. Though not as strong as the root, they are still medicinal. Both flower and root help stimulate the immune system by activating the production of white blood cells to fight infection.
We will be using the Echinacea flowers in our Immune Boosting Herbal Tea and Yarrow in our healing salves.

Just two more days until the Apple River Farm Tour. Our Apothecary will be open and stocked with herbal extracts, herbal oils and salves, herbal teas, our seasonal Elderflower Cordial and so much more. I'll be leading herbal plant walks through our gardens and talking about their medicinal properties at 11am, 1 & 3 pm. Elderflower Cordial from certified organic fresh Elderflowers on the farm. This will be available in our herbal apothecary next Saturday at the Apple River Farm Tour from 10am-5pm. It's sweetened with local raw honey from The Beez Kneez, LLC. Our cordial is great poured over ice, added to lemonade, sparkling water, or a cocktail or mocktail mix. We'd love to see you at the farm tour.

Freshly wildharvested young Spring Horsetail from the farm. Horsetail, (Equisetum arvense) is one of the oldest living plants on planet Earth. It dates back more than 350 million years and at one time soared to 100 feet tall. It is simply amazing to me the intellignece of this plant to survive overtime. They are a close relative to the fern and you'll often see them growing together. They both still propogate by spores.
Horsetail is very nutrient dense and rich in silica, supporting bone and connective tisue health.
This beautiful plant will be combined with other nutrient dense herbs we wildharvest and grow on the farm and will be available at the Apple River Farm July 12, from 10am-5pm. We are one of 14 farms on this tour. There are so many rich and diverse farms on this tour, many of them our neighbors. It's a good idea to mark this on your calendar now

Wild harvested Chickweed (Stellaria media) from our farm. Chickweed is nutrient rich with vitamins A, C, and B complex, rutin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, sodium, copper, iron and silica. These will be part of a nutrient dense herbal tea we're crafting as well as made into an oil. Chickeed oil is one of the important medicinal herbal oils in our 'Effective X Herbal Salve'. This salve soothse bug bites, itchy rashes and mild inflammatory skin conditions like eczema. Both of these and many more of our other herbal botanicals will be available during the Apple River Farm Tour on July 12th, from 10am-5pm. We're one of 14 farms that you can tour.
