February is American Heart Month! ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿ’œ

In 2010, the American Heart Association (AHA) created a program Healthy for Good, Life's Simple 7, which outlined the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and to provide guidelines along with tips on how to reduce those risk factors.

The AHA, along with the CDC and ACSM, do continuous research to help keep this information up-to-date. This information not only helps the general public but also the health care professionals, fitness professionals, and nutrition professionals who work with individuals who want to become healthier and reduce their risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

In 2022, the AHA updated Healthy for Good, Life's Simple 7 to Life's Essential 8, which now includes the impact of sleep on cardiovascular health. ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ›Œ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Cardiovascular health is nothing to shrug off or ignore.
Having the mindset of if you ignore it, it doesn't exist or it will go away is a recipe for disaster and even death. ๐Ÿคฏโ˜ ๏ธ

Here at What the HALE Fitness and Nutrition, this month, we will dive into the AHA's Life's Essential 8 and how it impacts YOU. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿซ€

โณ๏ธ There is no better time than THE PRESENT to discuss your cardiovascular health with your primary care provider (P*P) to determine what risk factors you may have.
Then you can look into your health/fitness/nutrition habits and how they impact your cardiovascular health with a fitness and nutrition professional, who can help you, along with your P*P, to start reducing those cardiovascular disease risk factors.

๐Ÿ‘‰THIS APPLIES TO UTILIZING GLP-1 MEDICATIONS TOOโ€ผ๏ธ

Exercise, both strength training and cardio helps you be in a calorie deficit, not only daily but helps with maintaining weight loss over time.

HOWEVER, if your nutrition habits are still having you in a CALORIE SURPLUS, you will not lose weight or body fat.

But Christine, when I workout I get HUNGRY!
Yes, this is supposed to happen, and to lose weight and still fuel your body properly, you need to have your nutrition habits in line with your goals...if you don't, you're setting yourself up for a serious mind f**k as well as unnecessary frustration.

Nutrition and exercise work together when it comes to weight loss, fitness, and health goals.

If one is out of whack or failing, the other will follow suit.

Hiring a nutritionist to help you understand and navigate your nutrition habits as well as holding you accountable, helps you reach your goals in a healthy, sustainable way.

The same goes for exercise and hiring a personal trainer.

Hopefully you can hire someone who is legitimately certified as both (yes we do exist)!

You can do it! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ’ฃI understand this may strike a chord with some...

I know it does with me...

๐ŸคฏThis is about mindset.
๐ŸคฏThis is about personal responsibility.

๐Ÿ‘‰When it comes to fitness and health goals, be it to lose weight, or gain strength and muscle mass, or decrease health issues, a person has to be real with themselves and they have to do the work.

๐Ÿ‘‰A person can hire fitness and health professionals to give them a blueprint of exactly what to do to reach their goals, but they still have to do the work to get the results...no half-assing s**t.

๐Ÿ‘‰A person can use adjuncts like GLP-1 medications to help reach their goals, but these adjuncts can only go so far. A person still has to put in the work with their nutrition and exercise habits to get healthy, sustainable results.

๐Ÿ‘‰People need to have realistic expectations when it comes to reaching their health and fitness goals. This means:
Sustainable results take TIME.
Sustainable results take CONSISTENCY.
Sustainabe results take EFFORT.
Sustainable results REQUIRE personal accountability.
Sustainable results are a LIFETIME COMMITMENT.

๐Ÿ‘‰Realistic expectations also means QUIT COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS FOR F***S SAKE! Everyone is different and everyone has their own set of challenges!

๐Ÿ’ฅIf you want to be healthier, you want to lose weight, or you want a better quality of life, then go all in and make yourself a priority. Stop making excuses as to why you can't do something or why something doesn't work if you haven't fully committed. That's not fair to you.

โญ๏ธChange your mindset.
โญ๏ธHold yourself accountable.
โญ๏ธHire the professionals to help you.
โญ๏ธDo the work and achieve the sustainable results.

Today is a GREAT DAY to get started (or continue to build) on those exercise habits!

๐Ÿ’ฅ 75% of Americans don't meet the MINIMUM recommendations for exercise put forth by ACSM, AHA, CDC, and WHO.

๐Ÿ‘‰ That means only 25% of Americans meet or exceed the MINIMUM recommendations for exercise.

๐Ÿ’ช If you are on a GLP-1 medication exercise is a MUST to maintain lean muscle mass and help maintain fat/weight loss.

Exercise can be...
Fun
Rewarding
Stress relief
Anti-aging
Empowering
An escape
A happy place
Stability
Independence

Exercise should NEVER be...
Punishment
Intimidating
Scary
Damaging
Harmful in any physical or mental aspects

๐Ÿ‘‰ Follow the information on the graphics...
Don't know where or how to get started?
Just ask! Drop me a text, DM, or email!

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’ช There is more than 1 way to exercise and meet the MINIMUM recommendations for exercise that can impact your health and quality of life.

These are infographics from the American Heart Association in 2018, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

I strongly encourage you to read through these infographics from the AHA.

All of these numbers are relevant and may apply to you or someone you love.

As paramedic on a fairly busy, rural EMS service, I can tell you we go on a significant amount of 911 calls regarding cardiovascular health and emergencies every year.

Some of these cardiovascular calls have good outcomes, others, not so much.

As a fitness and health professional, there are times when these cardiovascular calls are extremely frustrating and take it's toll; physically and mentally.

Why?

Because many aspects of cardiovascular health and disease can and are influenced by the habits people have!

Fitness/health/nutrition/wellness habits have a significant impact on cardiovascular health from disease prevention to being able to recover from a cardiovascular event, should one occur.

Good quality fitness, health, nutrition, and wellness habits, done constantly over time can be the difference between watching TV shows like ER, Chicago Fire, and the PITT, VS being the patient in the back of the ambulance or in the ER being worked on by us paramedics and other emergency health care providers.

If you are concerned about your cardiovascular health or have some risk factors for cardiovascular disease, it's not too late to start changing your habits for a better quality of life!

There are many quality health/fitness/nutritional/wellness professionals, like myself, who can help you get started and going on the path to an overall healthier lifestyle by helping create healthier habits that can help reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Welcome back to the beginning of the month and
Day 2 of
First 5 for the Next 12:
Hydration

One of the simplest ways to improve your quality of life is being hydrated!

A normal, sedentary person needs to drink at least 1/2 of their body weight in oz of water per day TO BE MINIMALLY HYDRATED.

Most of us take it for granted or flat out ignore our hydration levels because we drink other fluids thinking they will do the same as water. This is the furthest from the truth and can have some serious negative impacts on the body if we aren't diligent enough with our water intake.

I've lost count of the 911 calls where a person's hydration level was a factor in their illness.

We have damn near 100% control over our ability to remain hydrated through our choices. I say damn near because there are certain diseases that can impact how our body uses water, like Diabetes, Celiac Disease, Crohn's, POTS, and Sjogren's.

Being hydrated is so important for everyone!
Some people may need to drink more water than others due to:
Medications
Medical Weight Loss
Exercise/workouts
Athletic competition and training
Traveling
Sickness

At times, IV therapy needs to be utilized to help with hydration.

Follow the information on the graphics and if you have questions, don't hesitate to text, DM, or email me!

Did you know that February is American Heart Month?! ๐Ÿซ€

The AHA (American Heart Association) works closely with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) to create cardiovascular health and fitness guidelines through science-based evidence from the latest peer-reviewed scientific studies.

Why should this matter to you? ๐Ÿค”

โ˜ ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฅBecause cardiovascular disease doesn't give a s**t about what race you are, what gender you are, what genetics you have, what age you are, or how much you exercise.

HOWEVER...

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿซ€You can do things that can reduce your risk factors for cardiovascular disease or a cardiac event as well as have a more successful outcome if you do have a cardiac event or get diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease.

๐Ÿค“Here is the history behind American Heart Month from The American Heart Association.

"American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved.

-The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963.

-The Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month.

-While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, itโ€™s important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders."

The AHA is what sets the guidelines for us paramedics in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Care Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), Stroke algorithms, and more! The algorithms they put forth to us, not only for EMS, but for non-medical personnel, are based on legitimate scientific evidence from on going research.

โญ๏ธStay tuned all month for information and tips about cardiovascular health and you!

Happy American Heart Month!

SCIENCE!

Hello!

Welcome to What the HALE Fitness and Nutrition!

The internet and social media are littered with pseudoscience, junk science, anecdotal evidence, and confirmation bias, especially when it comes to health, fitness, nutrition, and wellness.

The intent of this page along with my website and business is to promote health, fitness, nutrition, and wellness information and training through legitimate science-based evidence.
