When it comes to vaccines, we take a practical and supportive approach at VirtualMed Iowa…

The final decision is up to the Parent! And then we’re here to educate, guide, and support.

Parents have the space to ask questions, think it through, and make the decision that feels right for their family.

Some parents choose to follow the standard schedule… some prefer a modified approach… and some choose to decline. We respect all of those decisions, and we’re here to care for your child either way.

Our job isn’t to make the decision for you… it’s to ensure you feel informed and confident in the decision you make.💜

Ever feel weirdly guilty about even thinking of seeing a different provider?

If yes, you’re not alone.

A lot of people tell us they’ve stayed with the same P*P for years because switching feels uncomfortable.

Here are the most common worries we hear... and the truth behind them:

▶️ “Will this even be covered by my insurance?”
Most primary care visits are covered just like any other clinic. Nothing “special” or hidden happens just because you try a different office. Coverage follows where you go!

▶️ “What if my doctor notices I went somewhere else?”
Doctors understand that life changes, schedules change, and needs change.

▶️ “Do I have to switch my P*P, or can I just come in for a visit?”
You don’t have to change anything on paper. You can be seen for a few visits and still keep your regular P*P.

▶️ “How does VirtualMed even work?”
It’s still primary care.... just more flexible and available. In-person visits are the most common. Virtual visits available when it makes sense. Same conversations, same medical decisions, fewer hoops!

And if you DO decide to make the switch it can be this easy...
- You book a visit like any other appointment
- Insurance works the same way it always has
- Records can be transferred for you
- You keep full control of where and how you’re seen

Trying a different clinic isn’t “cheating.” It’s just taking care of yourself in the season you’re in!

How did waiting weeks for an appointment start to feel normal?

For many families, getting care has slowly become something that takes more time, more steps, and more patience than it should.

Healthcare can feel simpler than that. More personal. More accessible.

That’s the experience we believe families deserve!

A lot of people ask this time of year:
“Is this a stomach bug… or the flu?”

It’s confusing...

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

A stomach bug usually starts in the gut. Vomiting and diarrhea tend to come first, sometimes with a mild fever. Most people start feeling better in 1–3 days.

Influenza, on the other hand, tends to hit the whole body. Fever, chills, body aches, headache, and extreme fatigue are common. Flu symptoms often last 5–7 days, with lingering symptoms for a week or two.

One reason this gets mixed up is that people often call any illness with vomiting “the flu” but true influenza is a respiratory virus, not a stomach one.

If symptoms are severe, lingering, or hard to sort out, it’s okay to get checked. Sometimes knowing what you’re dealing with makes a big difference in how you manage it.

Sometimes care can feel spread out... different visits for different settings, and not always the same familiar face.

That’s not how we approach care at VirtualMed Iowa.

We see kids for well-child exams and women for routine visits and you can still come back to the same provider when something else comes up. Sick visits. New symptoms. Follow-ups. Questions that don’t fit neatly into one appointment type.

Care stays connected, consistent, and personal... as much as we can.

That’s the kind of care we believe in!

Why do we care so much about (peri)menopause?

A message from Rachel 👇

"Over the past few years, I have realized just how little I truly understood about the impact of midlife hormone changes on women’s health. I wasn’t always able to recognize the symptoms and I certainly wasn’t trained to treat my patients the way they deserved. After many appointments that left me feeling like I was failing the women sitting in front of me, I knew something had to change. So I took the initiative to get curious and really figure this menopause stuff out.

Through additional training and certifications, my passion and empathy for women navigating midlife changes has grown exponentially.

So why do I care?

I care because an entire generation of women... my mom, my mother-in-law, my aunts... missed out on life-changing care due to misinterpreted data and outdated guidance.

I care because leading causes of death in women, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, are directly impacted by estrogen loss.

I care because osteoporosis can often be prevented with appropriate estrogen replacement.

I care because too many women suffer repeated UTIs and even hospitalizations that could have been avoided.

I care because while there’s no cure for dementia, we know estrogen plays a role in protecting cognitive health.

I care because brain fog and mood changes can quietly erode relationships, work performance, and daily joy.

The truth is, women are living longer but what good are extra years if they’re spent suffering?

I want the women I love... my family, my friends, my patients to age well, feel strong, and live fully.

I care.
And I hope you do too."

If you’re exhausted but can’t sleep, this is for you.

One common symptom many women in their midlife notice is poor sleep waking up tired, restless nights, or feeling wired but exhausted.

A few things that can help support sleep during this stage:
⏰ Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake time
☕️ Limiting caffeine later in the day
🏋️ Strength training or walking regularly
💊 Magnesium or evening relaxation routines
🍺 Reducing alcohol, especially at night

For some women, these changes can make a noticeable difference.

And for others.... symptoms will persist despite doing “all the right things.”

If you’ve tried lifestyle and supportive steps and still don’t feel like yourself, that’s a good time to schedule a visit and talk through what’s going on and what options may help.

You’re not imagining it... and support is here.

Darn… flu season is definitely here.

Influenza cases are rising across Iowa right now, and we’re seeing more sore throats, fevers, body aches, and sudden “this hit me fast” symptoms over the past couple weeks. Local and state reports are showing an uptick, and it’s lining up with what we’re seeing in clinic.

A quick reminder:
👉 You can schedule a visit with us for flu-like symptoms.

If you’re feeling off, running a fever, or trying to figure out whether it’s the flu or something else, we can help with evaluation and testing when appropriate.

Appointments are easy to book online, or you can call/text 515-520-8365.
