Twelve brave Kiwanians from Ames Golden K braved 40 mph winds on Thursday afternoon (5/15) to complete the scheduled cleanup of our county assigned “Adopt a Road” two mile segment by Holubs on east 13th Street. The winds tried their hardest to make it nearly impossible to hang on to the bags (without flying) as they ballooned up and down, twisted and tried hard to fly away!
Our mission was accomplished in just over an hour – thanks to Mark’s organization and Jim’s pickup assistance.

“Caregiving Alternatives for Elderly People.” Kacie Purl, Coordinator, St. Croix Hospice, Ankeny spoke about caregiving alternatives for elderly people, at a recent meeting of the Ames Golden K Kiwanis Club. Kacie coordinates the St. Croix Hospice Care Program in the Ankeny area. She explained the difference between palliative care and hospice care. Palliative care patients can continue to seek curative treatment whereas hospice care is available when a cure is no longer an option, or treatments outweigh the benefits. Hospice care is fully paid by Medicate provided that a patient meets the qualifications, Kaci indicated that 50% of the patients in hospice care spend 18 days or less in hospice care. About ¼ of the patients have Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. She emphasized that hospice care is provided to care for and comfort patients and their loved ones during an advanced illness. For more information about hospice care through the St. Croix hospice program, see www.steroixhospice.com or email Kpurl@steroixhospice.com.
