With heavy hearts, we remember Dr. Robert M. Oneal, one of the visionary founders of our plastic surgery practice, who passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025.
Dr. Oneal’s distinguished career in plastic and reconstructive surgery spanned more than four decades. After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, he completed his general and plastic surgery residencies at the University of Michigan. In 1969, he established a private practice at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor (now Trinity Health)—what would eventually grow into the Center for Plastic Surgery Ann Arbor.
A true pioneer, Dr. Oneal set the standard for excellence in both patient care and professionalism. He was also a gifted teacher who helped shape the next generation of surgeons, including Dr. Sherick, who worked alongside him at our practice and benefited from his mentorship and camaraderie.
In the photo below, Dr. Oneal is pictured with Dr. Sherick and two of our esteemed retired surgeons, Dr. Hing and Dr. Beil—each of whom had the privilege of working closely with him.
He was not only a brilliant surgeon but also a compassionate mentor who treated every patient and staff member with unwavering respect and kindness. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the standards of care he established.
We are deeply grateful for the foundation Dr. Oneal laid. His vision, passion, and integrity continue to guide everything we do.
