It is with heavy hearts that we make this announcement….

The Annapolis Fire Department regretfully shares the news of the passing of Retired Lieutenant George N. (Sonny) Tyler, Jr. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Lieutenant Tyler began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Eastport Volunteer Fire Company before being hired as a career Firefighter/Chauffeur with the Annapolis Fire Department on November 16, 1962. He was promoted to Firefighter First Class in 1967 and then promoted to Sergeant/Lieutenant in 1972. Before his retirement on October 1, 1984, he worked a nearly twenty-three career in assisting the residents and visitors of Annapolis. He continued to have a presence in the Department Operations and always attended department and retirement events including being an active participant of the Annapolis Police - Fire Retirees Association where he served as Treasurer.

He served on the Annapolis Fire Department's Apparatus Committee and was commended by the Fire Chief for the work they did. He had a letter of appreciation from the Station Captain at Eastport for his work in stocking furniture and supplies for station renovations. He received a letter of commendation from another department for his professional response to a working fire. He also was recognized for his assistance in coordinating and working with the Fire Prevention Bureau including the Miss Fire Prevention Contest.

The family is working on the plans for a service and details will be shared as available. Arrangements are being handled by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater and further information may be obtained at their website.

Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts at this most difficult time.

Eastport Volunteer Fire Company and the City of Annapolis Fire Department has a new pumper (Engine 361). This is a 750 gallon, low hosebed, "Pierce Enforcer" sitting at 29' 8" long with a 60" cab! She's beautiful don't you think?

It has been a while since I posted and while it is not specifically a post about Eastport Vol Fire Co. The press event was held here. I know my dad would want me to post this so here it goes... I would love to hear your comments:

Gov. Larry Hogan spoke at the Eastport Volunteer Fire Company in favor of bills that would expand workers compensation coverage to other types of cancer as well as eliminating taxes on retirement benefits for public safety officials.
