Every advancement in prosthetic care starts with understanding how patients move, adapt, and live in the real world.

We’re honored to share the journey of Hala, who has been receiving care at MCOP for more than ten years. In early 2025, she chose to undergo osseointegration surgery, a specialized procedure that allows a prosthesis to attach directly to the bone of the residual limb. As an above knee amputee with an active lifestyle, her goal is to return to long distance biking and confident everyday mobility.

After completing surgery and physical therapy, Hala volunteered to participate in MCOP’s ongoing data collection study. Through gait analysis, alignment work, and functional movement testing, her participation helps our team evaluate prosthetic performance in real world conditions, informing both current care and future innovation.

Supporting these efforts across our DMV clinics is Sarah Hiller, who stepped into the Research Assistant role in late 2024. By systematically tracking patient progress, Sarah helps transform individual outcomes into actionable clinical insights that guide service improvements and evidence based decision making.

We’re proud to work alongside patients, clinicians, and researchers who are shaping the future of prosthetic care together.

𝗠𝗖𝗢𝗣 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀: 𝗔 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀

Each mold shown here represents a critical step in the prosthetic process. Long before a patient takes their first step, these molds are shaped through careful evaluation, clinical expertise, and hands on craftsmanship.

Every mold is unique because every patient is unique. By capturing precise anatomy and movement needs, these molds become the foundation for custom prosthetic sockets designed for comfort, durability, and long term performance.

This is the work that happens quietly behind the scenes, but it is where personalized care truly begins. Through precision and dedication, we help our patients move forward with confidence.

This past Saturday, MCOP’s Maryland clinics — Annapolis, Baltimore, and Silver Spring — were proud to take part in SEBCM - Maryland Mobility Day, a powerful event focused on access, inclusion, and the freedom to move.

Hosted by So Every Body Can Move, the event brought together individuals with limb loss and limb difference for a day of exploration, empowerment, and education. From guided yoga and adaptive sports to strength training and first-time running blade experiences, participants were able to engage in movement on their own terms — many discovering new possibilities for the first time.

In addition to physical activity, the event also provided a chance to learn about adaptive devices and better understand the process of accessing and navigating coverage for these essential tools. Education and advocacy were just as much a part of the day as movement.

At MCOP, we’re dedicated to creating an environment where each patient’s goals are supported with innovation, understanding, and care — whether those goals involve biking, climbing, or simply moving with more freedom.

A heartfelt thank you to every participant, family member, clinician, volunteer, vendor, and sponsor who made this day unforgettable. Also, a special thank you to Sheryl Sachs for organizing such a meaningful and impactful experience.

Together, we move forward — stronger, freer, and more informed.

Every cut, every hammer strike, every layer of carbon fiber, every pour of resin is part of transforming raw materials into a device that will support someone’s daily life.

This isn’t assembly line work. It’s craft. It’s precision. It’s the art of building mobility from the ground up.

At Medical Center Orthotics & Prosthetics, that level of care is at the core of everything we create.
Because every patient deserves a device built with skill, pride, and purpose.

What a spooktacular time! Last Thursday, our Fairfax team hosted its first Trunk or Treat event for prosthetic patients and their families yesterday. This monster mash was the perfect way to kick off the Halloween weekend.

Attendees had a blast exploring 8 incredibly themed trunks, collecting a mountain of treats, and showing off their creativity at the treat bag decorating station.

Everyone stayed warm and festive with plenty of hot cocoa and apple cider. It was a wonderful evening for MCOP patients and their families to connect and celebrate in a fun, safe environment.

A few years ago, MCOP Silver Spring patient Ross Holland found an unconventional way to improve his mobility — by flipping his carbon blades around.

It might not be the standard setup, but as you can see in this video, it’s proof that sometimes thinking outside the box can lead to incredible results. Ross hopes his unique idea can help open up new opportunities and insights for other amputees navigating their own prosthetic journeys.

👏 Adaptive. Innovative. Inspiring.

Kristen has been a bilateral upper extremity amputee for over 10 years. In that time, she’s navigated the ups and downs of recovery, adaptation, and living life on her own terms.

In this Q&A video, Kristen shares her journey — from the challenges she’s faced, to the tools and mindset that helped her move forward. Most importantly, she offers practical insight for others in the limb loss community, straight from her perspective as an amputee.

Her story is one of resilience, honesty, and empowerment — and we’re honored to share it with you.

Last time Paolo stopped by our Silver Spring clinic, our prosthetist worked with him to fine-tune his surfing leg so he could keep chasing waves. This time, he returned for something new: the Össur Navii Knee, built to match his adventurous lifestyle.

💧 Durable & waterproof — ready for every splash, wave, and dive
🪨 Powerful actuator — giving support on ramps, stairs, and uneven ground
🚶 Smooth swing & natural gait — making every step feel natural
📲 Össur Logic app — personal settings, progress tracking, and real-time feedback

For Paolo, the Navii means safety, comfort, and confidence to keep moving — whether he’s exploring the coast, traveling, or tackling daily adventures.

Here’s to technology that empowers movement — and to Paolo, for showing what resilience looks like every day!
