Virginia Coalition to Protect Women's Health

Virginia Coalition to Protect Women's Health http://www.coalitionforwomenshealth.org/ These laws are called "TRAP laws,” which stands for Targeted Regulations Against Abortion Providers.

In March 2011, Governor McDonnell signed SB 924, a bill that classifies women’s health centers in the state as a category of hospitals, making them subject to new regulations created by the Department of Health. Laws that target only abortion providers have nothing to do with the safe delivery of services for women and everything to do with legislators’ efforts to restrict access to reproductive healthcare. Women’s health centers that provide a full range of comprehensive health care services could close because of an inability to meet regulations that have nothing to do with women’s health and safety. The Governor has imposed an “emergency” regulatory process to create the new rules, which will limit time for deliberation and public input. Because of the rapid nature of this process, we need pro-choice activists like you to help us educate Virginians about the regulatory process and the impact that new medically-unnecessary regulations on abortion providers could have on women’s access to healthcare.

Last Tuesday, one-woman filibuster machine Wendy Davis and her angry feminist army blocked the Texas GOP from voting on an evil omnibus anti-abortion bill. Success! Until the next day, when Governor Rick Perry, Grand Protector of Ladies From Themselves, announced a second special session so he could...

Texans are fighting back! The battle isn’t over in Texas, and it’s not over in Virginia either. Just last month Virginia’s Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers went in to effect, and threaten the closure women’s health centers across the state. Politicians around the country remain focused on banning abortion and attacking reproductive health care. Across the country, we must stand together against bills that set extremist precedent for other states to imitate.

The bill Wendy is filibustering contains a Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers provision, designed to shut down clinics. We in VA know too well the effect TRAP has on women's healthcare, and we thank Wendy and all the amazing activists in the people's filibuster for keeping us inspired to fight harder here.
