Spain Just Changed the Game on School Food Policy
And the world should be paying attention.
In a bold move toward protecting children’s health, Spain has enacted a sweeping new law that bans ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and processed snacks from schools—and replaces them with real, whole, nutrient-dense foods.
What’s in? Fresh fruits and vegetables. Whole grains. Legumes. Fish.
What’s out? Junk food, soda, and deep-fried shortcuts.
They’ve even mandated vegetarian and vegan options, while limiting precooked meals and fried foods. It’s a comprehensive shift toward nutrition-first education.
Here’s what makes this so powerful:
• Daily servings of fresh produce, with nearly half being seasonal
• Weekly inclusion of fish and whole grains
• Junk food and sugary drinks removed from vending machines
• Equity in access—five nutritious meals per week for every student
• Dietary inclusivity with plant-based meal options
This isn’t just school lunch—it’s public health reform.
Personal responsibility only goes so far when the environment is designed to promote chronic illness.
Spain just reminded us: systemic problems demand systemic solutions. It’s time we make the healthy choice the easy choice—starting with our schools and our children.
Let’s rebuild a food system that nourishes our future.
