Less Tech, More Talk"
Spending too much time with technology can lead to speech and social delays for children.
Developing brains are particularly vulnerable to this, and where previous generations may have spent much more time reading, imagining or participating in activities that require focus attention, brains in children exposed to high volumes of technology may adapt to frequent visual stimulation, rapid change and little ...

MAKE CHRISTMAS A LANGUAGE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR CHILD

Christmas is a fantastic time of the year to do things out of the ordinary and spend special time with family. This is the perfect time to learn new vocabulary and tell stories. Here are some ideas for you:

1. DECORATE TOGETHER introducing new vocabulary, eg angel, nativity, ornament, elf, reindeer, etc.

2. TALK ABOUT FAMILY TRADITIONS. Tell your child what you did as a child and then talk about what your family does now. Ask your child what tradition they enjoy the most/least.

3. TELL CLASSIC STORIES such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Twas the Night Before Christmas.

4. SING CHRISTMAS SONGS such as Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Twelve Days of Christmas, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, and Silent Night.

5. BAKE TOGETHER Teach the vocabulary used for baking, eg. mixing bowl, spatula, cookie sheet, measuring spoons and cups. Talk about the ingredients eg. flour, sugar, baking soda, vanilla, chocolate chips, etc.

6. MAKE GIFTS for family members and friends. Give your child the freedom to make suggestions and follow his/her lead.

7. GO TO SPECIAL EVENTS such as Christmas pageants and musicals. Talk about what your favorite part of the event and ask your child what they liked most.

8. WATCH A FAVORITE MOVIE TOGETHER Ask your child to tell what the movie was about to someone who did not watch it with you.

MOST OF ALL...HAVE FUN LEARNING TOGETHER AND HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

COCHLEAR IMPLANT MYTH #6 You can't appreciate music with a cochlear implant.

TRUTH: Many cochlear implant recipients enjoy listening to music.
If you want to achieve music appreciation as a CI recipient, PRACTICE! Expecting music enjoyment and music appreciation to just “happen” is unrealistic and sets you up for disappointment. If you want to love music again, invest some time. It will be worth it!
Here are some pointers to get you started:

1. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. Think about how to get the best signal possible to your CI processors, which might mean opting for an assistive listening device. One option is a Direct Audio Input (DAI) cable, enabling an iPad or other device to stream music directly to your device. Another option is using Bluetooth technology to access your playlist and stream wirelessly. It may also be helpful to use large headphones placed over your processors to deliver sound directly to your microphones.

2. PERSERVERE! Don’t stop listening, even if the initial experience is unpleasant and all you hear is “noise”. Your brain is adjusting to the new experience and this takes time.

3: LISTEN TO FAMILIAR MUSIC. Listen to the music you liked before your hearing loss. This is a great place to start since your brain is already familiar with these sounds. The brain does a remarkable job of remembering and filling in the needed “spaces”, enabling continued enjoyment.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT MYTH #5
YOU CAN'T SWIM WITH A COCHLEAR IMPLANT.

In fact you CAN swim with a cochlear implant. All three implant manufacturers have options for waterproofing a cochlear implant. One, Advanced Bionics offers a fully waterproof processor. Be sure to tell your implant physician that this is important to you so that you can select the device or waterproofing option that is right for you.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT MYTH #4 A COCHLEAR IMPLANT WILL DESTROY WHATEVER HEARING I HAVE LEFT.

NOT ALWAYS
The inner ear is very delicate—but some newer cochlear implants have soft and flexible electrodes that are designed to preserve those delicate structures. That, combined with ever-improving surgical techniques, helps keep residual hearing in place.

It is important for you to discuss this with your doctor if this is a concern for you. Your surgeon can advise you as to which devices are better for preserving residual hearing and what to expect based on your ear structure and type of hearing loss. Be sure to ask questions before deciding which cochlear implant device you prefer.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT MYTH/TRUTH #3 I CANNOT HAVE AN MRI IF I HAVE A COCHLEAR IMPLANT: YES AND NO

SOME of the newer cochlear implants are approved for MRIs. If this is important to you, be sure to ask questions before deciding which cochlear implant device you prefer.

Know the brand and model of the cochlear implant.
Always carry the implant card you were given with you. If you do not have an implant card, contact the manufacturer to obtain one.

If you need an MRI, tell the health care provider and the MRI technologist about your implant and share the information on the implant card.
