Our Sunday Family Meeting Has Been a Game Changer

One thing that has helped our family stay balanced between home and school is our Sunday family meeting.

We take about 10 minutes to reset for the week. We talk about schedules, set a goal, and make sure everyone knows what’s coming.

Using the Ascend Family Journal during this time has made it even easier. It gives us a place to write down goals, reflect, and keep everyone on the same page.

These small weekly rhythms help kids feel prepared instead of overwhelmed.

A calm Sunday really can lead to a smoother week.

If you’re looking for a simple way to build connection and structure at home, the Ascend Family Journal Bundle is a great place to start.

💚 Grab your copy and start your own Sunday reset. Link in the comments!

If your child struggles with time management… it may not actually be about time.

Many kids today aren’t struggling because they’re lazy or unmotivated.

They’re struggling because their nervous system is overloaded.

When kids feel overwhelmed:
• Focus drops
• Transitions get harder
• Emotions spike
• Avoidance increases

What looks like “poor time management” is often really stress and dysregulation.

The solution isn’t more pressure.
The solution is predictable rhythms, regulation, and support.

Small daily routines can reduce overwhelm, build confidence, and help kids follow through.

And if your child is struggling with overwhelm, follow-through, or transitions, Ascend is here to help.🫶🏽

💛 March is Social Worker Month. 💛

This month we celebrate a profession rooted in advocacy, resilience, and relentless hope.

Social workers show up in hospitals, schools, courts, treatment centers, private practices, and living rooms…walking with people through crisis, change, grief, addiction, trauma, and growth.

At Ascend, Social Worker Month is especially meaningful.

The founder, Ja’Neair Johnson, has dedicated over 20 years to the field serving in mental health, addictions, and school-based social work. From inpatient treatment to classrooms, from crisis response to coaching families, her work has always centered one thing:

Helping people build emotional strength that lasts.

Two decades of:
• Hard conversations
• Crisis management
• Prevention work
• Advocacy
• Healing spaces
• And teaching resilience on purpose

Social work isn’t just a career. It’s a calling.

And Ascend was built on that foundation. 💛

Here’s to the social workers who carry stories, hold space, and keep showing up — even when it’s hard.

Happy Social Worker Month!

🧠 We Have a Resilience Gap.

I’m having this conversation with parents all the time.

Our kids are struggling with frustration.
If it doesn’t go their way… they fall apart.
If plans change… they shut down.
If something feels hard… they avoid it.

This isn’t about bad kids.
It’s about capacity.

A lot of our children simply haven’t had their capacity stretched.

Somewhere along the way, we started protecting kids from discomfort instead of preparing them for life.

And here’s the hard truth:
The world is not going to adjust every expectation.
The world is not always going to speak kindly.
The world is not going to remove obstacles.

So we have to raise kids who can:
• Sit in discomfort without melting down
• Think through a problem before panicking
• Fail and try again
• Figure some things out on their own

When we were growing up, we were expected to attempt a solution before going to an adult. Now many kids don’t even know how to start the problem-solving process.

That’s not a character flaw.
That’s a missing skill.

And skills can be taught.

We have to stretch capacity.
Not shrink expectations.
We have to build grit alongside grace.

If you need support building emotional strength and problem-solving skills in your child or teen, Ascend is here and currently accepting new clients.

🧠 The Focus Theory

Ever notice how once you buy something, you suddenly see it everywhere? That’s your brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS) at work.

Your brain filters thousands of pieces of information every second and highlights what it believes is important. When you focus on something, your brain starts looking for more of it.

That means if you constantly focus on stress, problems, or negativity… you’ll notice more of it.

But if you intentionally look for:
• Small wins
• Moments of joy
• Gratitude
• Growth
• Progress

Your brain begins to highlight those too.

You don’t ignore hard things.
You just train your attention to notice the good alongside them.

What you focus on expands. 💛

🖤 Honoring Black History Month 🖤

At Ascend, we recognize that Black history is not just something we remember—it’s something we live, carry, and continue.

Black History Month is a time to honor the resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black individuals and communities, past and present. It’s also a time to acknowledge the ongoing impact of systemic inequities and the importance of supporting mental health, healing, and wholeness within Black communities.

We believe emotional wellness, cultural identity, and collective healing are deeply connected. Creating space for rest, reflection, joy, and mental health support is part of honoring Black history—not just this month, but always.

Today and every day, we remain committed to:
• Supporting mental wellness
• Centering dignity and humanity
• Encouraging healing across generations

❄️ Snow Day Bingo ❄️

Snow days mean flexible routines for our family.
We rescheduled our Sunday family meeting, grabbed plenty of snacks, and yes there’s been a little Netflix binge too 😄

And that’s okay.

Connection doesn’t disappear when routines shift, it just looks different.

❄️ Snowed In = Time to Connect ❄️

Snow days offer something rare… unrushed family time.

This is a great moment to pull out the Ascend Journal Bundle and use it as a tool to slow down, check in, and have meaningful conversations together.

No pressure. No perfection.
Just presence and connection. 🤍
