Sharp County 4-H

Sharp County 4-H Each year Arkansas 4-H youth receive more than $80,000 in college scholarships at the state level for their 4-H work.

4-H is the youth development program conducted by the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service. 4-H members can select from many activities in 82 project areas ranging from automotive to clothing to space camp. Adult leaders, trained by county Cooperative Extension Service Faculty, teach projects to children using the "learn -by-doing" method. 4-H teaches leadership, citizenship, and skills children will use through out their lives. Some scholarships are available at the county level. The mission of 4-H is to provide opportunities for youth to acquire knowledge, develop life skills, form attitudes, and practice behavior that will enable them to become self directing, productive, and contributing members of society. The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status, and is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

A couple of fun things coming up this week with 4-H!

*Monday - showmanship clinic at the Sharp County fairgrounds. Come learn about different livestock and basics of showing!

*Tuesday - outdoor day at the Mammoth Spring state park! Bring your family out to the park that morning and join 100+ 4-H kids from all the surrounding counties! It will be a great way to meet other 4-H families and participate in all of the activities we have planned!

Alright Sharp County, we have a problem!
It's a great problem to have, but we need your help!

Sharp County 4-H is growing, and growing fast!

Our community clubs are maxed out on how many kids can join their clubs and we need to recruit more club leaders! It's so upsetting to have kids wanting to join a community club and not have a club to put them in! (Of course they can still join 4-H, and participate in just county activities but many are wanting to join community clubs and be involved in the monthly meetings/activities)

If you are looking for a way to get more involved in the community and help kids in your area, or want to get your kids involved and are willing to lead their club, reach out to me!
You can find a friend or two and have them help so it's less work per person!

What do we look for in leaders:
-Very motivated and dedicated to make your club successful
-Can lead club meetings once a month (at least 8 out of 12 months a year)
-Work with 4-H families in your club to schedule meetings and send reminders
-Help 4-H members learn about the importance being involved in their communities and volunteering
-Plan a fun activity and an educational activity for your meetings

What will the Extension office help with:
-We will help with your first few meetings to help you get familiar with 4-H and your club, and will be available if you need us to help at any other club meetings!
-We will help you plan your fun activities and educational activities when you need us to
-We will help pay for the materials you need to run your club meetings
-We will help recruit members to your club
-We will help set up a meeting location that works for you
-We will help with marketing for your club
-We will run your background check, at no cost to you

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please reach out to us with any questions you have, or to help get you started!

So many areas of Sharp County were greatly affected by the tornados that came through this past weekend.

Several of our 4-H families lost their homes, or had damage. We would like to do a collection here at the Sharp County Extension office for our 4-H families and for those all across the county.

We will be collecting toiletries, bottled water, non-perishable foods and gift cards (Walmart, harps, local restaurants, etc.) and distribute them to those in need!

If you would like to donate, but can’t make it to the office, send us a message and we will do our best to arrange a pick up with you!

*Thank you to Reid Tyler from Fulton County 4-H for being our first donation!

4-H members interested in being on the Sharp County Junior Fair Board, check out the new update!
Applications due Thursday, March 20th!

Call the Extension office if you would like an application and we will get one to you! If you were a member last year, you still need to read/sign the updated handbook!

**EDIT**
With the devastating storms that went through Sharp County this past weekend, we have decided to extend the Junior Fair Board application deadline. The NEW deadline will be Thursday, March 20th.
We were locked out of our old email address so if anyone sent their application by email, please forward that to our NEW EMAIL sharpcofair@gmail.com
If you were a Junior Fair Board member in the past, you don't have to fill out the entire application but you DO still need to read and sign off on the new handbook!

If you need an application or a handbook, comment on this post to let us know or you can pick one up at the Highland High School office from Vicki Brink.
You can send your completed application/signed handbook to the new email address, or drop off your forms at the Sharp County Extension office, Ash Flat Livestock Auction, or Highland High School office to Vicki Brink.

Sharp County Junior Fair Board applications are now available!
This is such a great program for the kids involved and such an asset to the Sharp County Fair!

Applications are due March 15th so get them in ASAP! Let us know if you have any questions!
