June is Pride month, an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the lives and contributions of the le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, queer/questioning, inters*x, and as*xual (LGBTQIA+) community.

While the dancing and colorful festivities are a wonderful way to celebrate, it’s also an opportunity to shine a light on the unique challenges members of this community face, particularly when it comes to their mental health and well-being.

We're here to remind you that Sunstone is your ally.

You are never alone, and help is here for you.

Sunstone recognizes Pride month. While the dancing and colorful festivities are a wonderful way to celebrate, it’s also an opportunity to shine a light on the unique mental health challenges members of the LGBTQIA+ community face.

Grief is Hard, but THIS is Harder

In observance of Memorial Day, Sunstone Counseling remembers and honors those who lost their lives in their selfless service to our nation's security.

We also recognize the profound loss that loved ones of fallen service members have endured.

Whether the loss is days, months or even years old, grief can show up when least expected to remind us of its gravity and breadth.

You are not alone, and a compassionate Sunstone counselor can help.

We can choose to suppress grief's attention-seeking signals; however, complete disregard for grief’s journey might create a more difficult path.

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate and honor the mothers and maternal figures in our lives. To all the mothers among us, we hope you take time to celebrate YOU this Sunday.

And we recognize that among the brunches, flowers, and gatherings, there are many who struggle with complex emotions surrounding Mother's Day. Sunstone's team of compassionate counselors are here to support you - whether you struggle with infertility, have a strained mother/child relationship, or have experienced the loss of a mother or child.

We also acknowledge all of the mothers who often put the needs of others ahead of their own and ignore their own challenges until the burden becomes too heavy. We are here for you, too - so you can prioritize your mental health for both yourself and those around you.

Embracing Change and Planting Seeds of Growth

It’s spring! 🌞💦🌱The outdoors is a kaleidoscope of colors, as we see transitions from dormant stages to vitality.

Yet often we want to skip over or dismiss the process it took to get to this point. It was dedicated and difficult work to be “planted.”

Much like the seeds and bulbs around us, we may be “in process.” We may have changes on the horizon, both chosen and unwelcome.

Change and growth can be unnerving and exhausting. It can also be incredibly rewarding and life-changing.

Coping with Caregiver Stress: Self-care for Caregivers

Are you the caretaker in your family, for your friends? Do you have a loved one who struggles with depression, trauma, or other mental or physical health related issues?

Often, caregivers tend to live with chronically elevated stress levels and may neglect their own self-care – factors that raise the risk for negative impacts on both emotional and physical wellbeing.

Counseling can be for you, too. Find support, empathy, understanding, compassion, and resources by talking to a counselor who can provide a safe space for you to process and invest in yourself. We'd love to help. After all, you can’t care for someone else if you’re not caring for yourself.

Caregivers tend to live with chronically elevated stress levels and may neglect their own self-care - factors that raise the risk for negative impacts on both emotional and physical wellbeing. So it’s vitally important that caregivers take the time to also care for themselves.

Social Work for Social Good: Celebrating National Social Work Month

Every day, the almost 720,000 social workers in this country touch millions of lives. You’ll find social workers practically everywhere, working in schools, businesses, research, and program evaluation.

Professionals in social work also practice law, represent constituents in politics, advocate for and create policy, and advise on domestic and international relations.

Within your own community, social workers are serving in medical interdisciplinary teams, palliative and hospice care, community mental health and enrichment programs. They also work closely with communities that experience marginalization and oppression such as LGBTQIA+, people of color, the differently abled, persons experiencing trauma, homelessness, incarceration, addiction and abuse, and aging individuals.

March is National Social Work Month, where we honor the many contributions of the professionals, students, and organizations in the field of social work.

Thanks in part to social workers, the stigma of mental health illness has lessened over the years, and there is open and honest dialogue around mental health, opening the door for the field of mental health treatment. The fields of social work and therapy are inextricably linked, and we wouldn’t b...

5 Surprising Misconceptions about School Counselors

Previously known as “guidance counselors," school counselors' duties have evolved over time to take on a significantly more impactful role in educational settings.

Professional school counselors are recognized for their expanded scope of practice, enhanced educational requirements, and increased level of responsibility and accountability.

Yet many people still believe the purpose of a school counselor is predominantly to help inform their students' academic journeys. While this remains a key aspect of their role, their commitments extend far beyond this in support of their students' emotional and social wellbeing.

In celebration of National School Counseling Week, we shed light on some of the most common misconceptions of school counselors.
