As I watched the sun rise this morning, I reflected on Philippians 4:8. "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things." My goodness, did that verse speak to me! I reflected on the state of my mind. As COVID-19 spread through our land, was I was giving it too much attention ? Was I spending appropriate time in prayer, praise, and worship? I am not minimizing the horrible impact of this virus, but I want to maximize putting my trust in God. I will continue to take appropriate precautions, but I want to be mindful about things that are true, lovely, and of good report. How can I change my focus? What is of good report? I can be thankful for those who are working in healthcare, and I can pray for them. I can look outside and thank God for the natural beauty, and then go for a walk. I can realize that, if I have more free time than usual, I can put that time to good use.

What does it mean, in my life, to put time to good use? Read more, exercise, organize the pantry, write, FaceTime people I love, walk the dogs. Watch podcasts that I have been meaning to watch. Enjoy silly movies on TV. Put a puzzle on the table and spend time with the family creating memories.

I am writing a list of goals this morning, and will hold myself accountable. One day, I want to be able to look back on this time and see that it was put to good use.

Will you join me? Do you have some goals to meet? Ideas to share? Words of hope and encouragement? Feel free to reach out. We can do this. Let's do it together, even if the togetherness is virtual.

Blessings to you all,
Lori

Your Strength Will Fail: Why God Gives Us More Than We Can Handle

"That’s actually one of the most important outcomes that God intends for “all our affliction” to produce: “to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead” (2 Corinthians 1:9). It’s not the only outcome. As John Piper says, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.” But when it comes to our ultimate joy and comfort, few are more important than weaning our trust off ourselves and placing it onto God."

desiringgod.org When we are burdened beyond our strength, and every earthly comfort has failed, where can we rest our hope? On the God who raises the dead.

Anxiety, Waiting and the Coronavirus

A really good read.

"To spend our time frantically strategizing about how we’ll cross the flooded river is so instinctive, even though it is also foolish and needless. So do wash your hands, and do what is wise about working from home, or calling your doctor. But don’t let yourself for a moment forget where your true safety lies."

ccef.org Writing about events while they are happening is always a bit dangerous. It’s easy to encourage over-reactions and reinforce unhelpful panic in our hearts. That said, the COVID 19 coronavirus provides us with an opportunity

Why Christian Love Matters in Depression

Good read!
"As Christ’s followers we gladly leap into the mission field, cook meals for the destitute, and embrace the grieving; but when depression strikes, misconceptions can deteriorate this spirit of compassion. At best, we practice silence and avoidance. At worst, we blame the sufferer and disregard the depressed as too lax in faith to pull themselves from the depths."

thegospelcoalition.org Too often sufferers of depression find the church to be a home for ridicule, rather than truth and love.

Holidays can be overwhelming. Or, it can be a therapeutic time too. For instance, smells of cider, hot chocolate, or pine can remind of past memories, hopes of future memories, or peace in the moment. Sometimes it is good to pay attention to what our senses are telling us!

So, remember to stop and smell the holiday “roses” during this busy season!
