As health care providers our mission is not only to remediate a delay or disorder but to empower the parents with knowledge. We still have work to do, by the results of these polls, but we won’t stop spreading the word to #identifythesigns

Better Hearing and Speech Month is here and the poll results are in! The results are both enlightening and reinforcing. Among findings, the poll indicates parents still aren’t aware of many warning signs of early communication disorders. In fact, only 23% could identify 75% or more of the signs from a provided list. Only 5% correctly identified all the signs.

"Today, this little cup is so ubiquitous many parents just assume it’s a natural stage of child development.......But the thing is — Belanger [the inventor of the sippy cup]was an engineer. Not a dentist. And his design was more about keeping his rug clean than about how it might affect a kid’s mouth.

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month! As specialists in early intervention, we know that EARLY identification and EARLY treatment are CRUCIAL when a child is so young and their brain is rapidly growing.

BHSM is kicking off with some new results from ASHA's Identify the Signs campaign. Hear ASHA 2019 President Shari Robertson discuss the campaign and the importance of early intervention for communication disorders! https://identifythesigns.org

How intelligible should your toddler and preschooler be?

Intelligibility refers to how well speech can be understood by others. According to Coplan and Gleason (1988), your child’s speech at age 2 should be ~50% intelligible, at age 3 should be ~75% intelligible, and at age 4 should be ~100% intelligible. Keep in mind that #speechintelligibility is not synonymous with accuracy. In other words, your child may still exhibit #speechsounderrors even when he/she is 100% intelligible. If you have concerns about your child’s #speechdevelopment contact a local #speechtherapist 🗣

Autism Explained

April is Autism Acceptance Month.

Many people have an understanding of Autism that is based on little more than stringing together a few popular stereotypes. This video aims to help fill the gaps by cutting through the medical jargon and sharing instead the human side of Autism.

In the past few decades the world has come a long way in it's understanding of Autism. This is not least due to the contributions of autistic adults shedding insight into their own condition.

Autism Explained empowers parents to understand their autistic children and create healthy supportive environments. By combining the experience of an adult on the Spectrum with a single mum who lives this stuff every day, we set you on the path to regain family harmony and actually enjoy time with your kids!
