Honoring Our Veterans: Compassion, Community, and Commitment in 2025
As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the profound sacrifices made by those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This day is more than a commemoration—it is a call to reflect, express gratitude, and renew our commitment to supporting veterans and their families. The freedoms we cherish as Americans are built upon the courage, resilience, and dedication of our service members.
At APPS, we are privileged to work alongside many veterans, including those living with visible injuries and those facing invisible wounds, such as combat-related mental health challenges. The impact of military service extends beyond the individual—it touches families, communities, and our nation as a whole. Research continues to highlight the challenges faced by military families, including increased mental health struggles, higher rates of divorce, substance use, and homelessness. Alarmingly, veterans comprise over 13% of the adult homeless population in the U.S., with many experiencing substance use disorders and mental health conditions like PTSD.
In our fast-paced lives here in Northern Virginia and beyond, it can be difficult to find time for extra commitments. Yet, small acts of kindness and support can make a significant difference. This Veterans Day, I encourage each of us to find meaningful ways to honor and support those who have served.
Ways to Support Veterans in 2025:
Volunteer: Organizations like Team Rubicon (which mobilizes veterans for disaster response), Homes for Our Troops (building homes for injured veterans), and Operation Gratitude (sending care packages and letters) offer impactful volunteer opportunities.
Donate: Consider contributing to the Wounded Warrior Project, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, or Give an Hour (providing free mental health care to veterans).
Advocate: Support policies and initiatives that expand mental health resources, housing, and employment opportunities for veterans.
Connect: Attend local Veterans Day events, parades, or ceremonies. Reach out to veterans in your community—sometimes, a simple conversation or expression of gratitude can mean the world.
Educate and Inspire: Encourage children to participate in acts of kindness, such as writing letters to veterans, creating art, or learning about the history and significance of military service.
At a time when our nation faces division, one value unites us all: respect for those who have served. Let’s choose compassion, community, and action—not only on Veterans Day, but every day.
Thank you to all veterans, and to their families, for your service and sacrifice.
With gratitude,
Dr. Michael Oberschneider
