My Child Didn’t Pass Sports Physical. What Now?

Schools and organized-sports leagues often require kids to undergo sports physicals as a safety precaution before being green-lit for the field. These routine tests are meant to determine whether your child is physically okay to engage in group sports. These reviews commonly involve a doctor going over your child’s medical record. Your child will also undergo a series of exercises to measure her level of strength and flexibility. If your child has a medical issue and does pass the exam, your doctor may recommend a second exam. In certain cases, your pediatrician may have to call on a specialist for a second opinion or further review. Not passing the sports physical on the first try does not mean your child can never engage in sports activity. Sometimes a reexamination is needed.

Younger Kindergarteners More Likely to Be Diagnosed With ADHD

When it comes to starting kindergartner, does your birthday matter when it comes to an ADHD diagnosis. One study says yes. A child with an August birthday that’s starting school with a Sept. 1 birthday cut-off date has a 3 in 10 higher chance of being diagnosed with the medical condition compared to a child whose birthday is in September. Is this horoscope-driven? No, it’s a matter of age difference. Kids who were born in August are younger than their September peers, which points to the scary possibility that teachers may be conflating lack of maturity for a medical issue.

Hearing screenings can be performed from as early as shortly after birth through childhood and beyond. Just like an annual physical, these screenings can help pinpoint any hearing problems and nip them in the bud early on. Hearing screenings are usually passed or fail. But be advised that a fail result may not necessarily mean your child will have an abnormal hearing for the rest of her life. Basic hearing exams need to be put into context with further testing.

What Kinds of Hearing Tests Does My Toddler Need?

Hearing exams are not a once-and-done type of medical procedure. As your child ages, they will need to have their hearing checked to ensure normal development, and there are no issues. Toddlers typically undergo two kinds of hearing exams. One is called play audiometry. Via earphones your child will hear sounds from a machine and will be requested to do something with a toy, corresponding to the sound played. Another exam is visual reinforcement audiometry. During this exam, your child will be asked to look toward a specific thing that produces sound, and if performed correctly, the child will be rewarded with something entertaining such as a flashing light or a moving toy.

What to do if a Wart Returns After Treatment

Warts developed during childhood usually do not pose any serious issues, as they naturally go away on their own or can be treated with salicylic acid. But if the warts are stubborn and return, you and your child may need to consider a more serious treatment plan. One method is cryotherapy, the practice of freezing off the wart. The team at Penguin Pediatrics uses a substance called liquid nitrogen crack down on the layers of the wart for removal. However, experts have ditched ADD for ADHD to capture all types of the disorder, from those who are inattentive to those who are hyperactive, and everything in-between. No matter what we call it, the treatment is typically medication and special “systems” put in place by parents and teachers to help the individual learn in the best way possible.

What Should My Child Expect During a Sports Physical?

Before your child steps onto a field or a court with fellow teammates, make sure she’s gone through a routine sports physical. These exams ensure your little athlete is physically ready to play in team sports safely. Schools and sports program often require it. But even if they don’t, you should have one done anyway. During a typical exam, your child’s doctor will review her medical history, the family’s medical history, and do a full review of her current health. Other factors that will be considered include prescription medications being taken and previous health conditions. Following that, the doctor will measure the child’s vitals, from weight to blood pressure.

Why Your Child Needs a Hearing and Vision Check

Vision and hearing issues can develop at any time during childhood. That’s why it’s so important to become aware of warning signs and have your kid’s eyes and ears periodically checked. Visual and auditory issues can negatively impact a child’s school life. For example, nearsightedness is a common issue that can crop up during the first six years of life and prevent your child from being able to see the chalkboard. Hearing problems prevent your child from hearing the instructor, which also gets in the way of learning.

Younger Siblings of Kids with Autism Have Higher Risk of This Disorder

Having an older sibling with ADHD makes the younger child three times more likely to develop the brain disorder compared to kids that don’t have an older brother or sister with the condition, based on findings from a recent study. The findings suggest that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may have something to do with “shared familial mechanisms,” as the study’s head author puts it. ADHD is tied to impulsive behavior and trouble paying attention.
