Great ideas for how to encourage sounds through play! I can’t wait to make my own Babble Bin 🐶🐷🚁!!

Let’s talk about play sounds! Play sounds can be:
-vehicle 🚂
-environmental (bang!💥)
-animal 🐖
-people (a choo!🦠 ) or
-exclamatory (uh oh!)

These sounds can often be elicited during play before a child can imitate a true word.

Make your own babble bin by collecting items from other toys, around the house, or look for loose items at a yard sale. Be mindful of the size of objects if you plan to do this with a little one still in the oral phase.

Ideas for use:
✅Hold up two items and see what your baby or young child grabs. “Bombard” that sound slowly with many pauses in between. Repeat and wait! Repeat and wait!

✅Pair sound with an action to see if they’ll imitate what you do with that item! Motor imitation precedes verbal imitation and is still a WIN! 💯

✅Elongate the vowel! Vowels are typically easier to imitate than consonants- For example, say “mOOOO” with a fun tone instead of a boring “moo” 🐄

✅Be silly! Change your pitch to catch your child’s attention and keep it fun while adding context to play.

✅Use waterproof items in the tub! Some children demonstrate the best attention (which is required for imitation) when splashing with supervision.

✅Bring out a few items and model pointing to items vs grabbing while bombarding the sounds.

✅Pair items with pictures or a book activity while working on sounds!

❤️ This post by @learnwithchatterboxes! What sound does your child love to do?! Kam loves 🍑 💨 sounds 🤣🤣🤣

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I got quite the chuckle from this. Funny but oh so true! English is a very difficult language 🤓!

Truth!!

Ok, now I wish I had a magic wand that I could wave that helps kids suddenly learn how to talk. But, that’s just not possible, and I think it’s important for parents to know this BEFORE starting early intervention. Now, do some kids pick it up really quickly and start talking pretty soon after starting therapy? Of course! But, for the majority of kids- speech therapy takes time- and most importantly effort! And when I say effort, I mean by the SLP, the child, and the family/caregivers! So if you don’t see immediate changes a few weeks or a month into therapy, that’s to be expected. Also, if you have not seen progress after months of therapy, please ask your therapist because many times there is progress being made that’s not easily observable to parents (like preverbal skills, nonverbal skills, and AAC)!

This is a good one for parents to know- Doctors are super knowledgeable about many things- BUT they did not spend YEARS learning about speech and language like SLPs! Where they say, “let’s wait and see”, we say, “let’s evaluate and see”! Same thing for referring for autism and other developmental conditions assessment! Thanks Anna.Dee.SLP!

Happy Mother’s Day 🌸💕!!

I hope everyone is staying safe and well during these unprecedented times. I miss seeing all of the little kiddos in person but am grateful for teletherapy so we are able to still resume sessions and make progress toward goals.

What does a teletherapy session look like? It is conducted in a very similar manner as an in-person session; games and toys are incorporated into the session as well as many opportunities to work on goals (i.e. target sounds, language skills, etc.). Your child will still receive the high quality of service that you are accustomed to-it will just be over a computer!

I am currently scheduling sessions seven days a week so if weekday hours aren’t convenient, I am available on Saturdays and Sundays. If you are interested in scheduling sessions or have any questions, please let me know.

Please take good care and be well.

Thanks Mrs. Speechie P. I love sharing her info...always on point 🙌🏼!!

I get this question a lot! The most important thing to note is that we don’t have a clear understanding of the difference between late talkers and kids that continue to need additional support AND we are finding out that late talkers ARE STILL STRUGGLING after they catch up with language. Which means- we should NOT be waiting for these kids to catch up on their own and we SHOULD evaluate and intervene early!

Speech Language Therapists...we don’t only work on lisps and R’s 🤓!

Most people think speech therapists ONLY work on speech (“he can’t say R”, “he stutters”), but just as often if not more we work on LANGUAGE skills. And no, that doesn’t mean learning a second language- it’s more about how language develops! Check out one of my favorite graphics to learn the difference in speech and language!

This is a great resource for parents of preschoolers (between the ages of about 3-5).

A lot of people are surprised when their preschool child, who is talking, gets referred for a speech assessment for language concerns. Speech therapy is more than learning to talk and saying sounds correctly! If your child has difficulty with one or more items on this list, it might be a good time to talk to a speech pathologist!

Parents, you know your child better than anyone. Trust your gut-if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

What better time than Better Hearing & Speech Month to spread the word to parents about the early warning signs of communication disorders and the benefits of early treatment? Parents, trust your instincts! If you ever have concerns about your child's speech/language or hearing abilities, contact a certified audiologist or speech-language pathologist for an evaluation near you (https://www.asha.org/profind/).
