"The Web of Associations" - During a Traumatic Event, Our Autonomic Nervous System(ANS) Sends off Signals to Our Body/Brain to Keep Us Safe. Our Hearts Pound Fast! Feelings/Sensations of HYPERarousal Prepare us to Mobilize and FIGHT or FLIGHT our way to Safety. If our Automatic nervous system PERCEIVES death may be imminent, the blood moves toward our chest, and Dissociation, Immobilization sensations of FREEZE take Over our body.
If we do not receive Adequate Care/Loving-Kindness to release the survival energy and repair ourselves from the experience(s), then we may ping-pong from Hyper to Hypo arousal states chronically. The Associations created from these traumatic experiences may lead us to unhealthy coping behaviors, thoughts, and meanings, especially when paired with frequent emotional/physical/sexual/mental abuses.
For example, If you had an asthma attack as you were running up a hill and your ANS perceived you were going to die - A possible association might be: every time I "hear" someone speaking about running -----> it sets off my ANS subconsciously, and the "sensations" of constriction in my chest begin ----> I "feel" anxious ---->I might say words/beliefs like "Running is really hard" ---->My "behavior" is to sit and watch tv as a child rather than go running around with the other children -----> My body *feels* safe even though the behavior is harmful to me.
