Surprisingly, sometimes the worst thing to do to change a persistent habit is try and change it by an act of will-power or force.
Old habits often serve a purpose, even if that purpose is outdated. It's kind of like if someone from the 1800s were living in 2022 and just didn't realize that there were more efficient ways to go to the store than on horseback.
Do these 4 things for easier habit change:
1. Once you have identified the habit you want to change, ask yourself: "How is this habit helping me?" You might not like the consequences of the habit, but it might be trying to help you in the moment  (feel comfortable, safe, confident, put something off, etc.).
2. Once you have identified how the habit is trying to help you (the habit's positive intention), think of some alternative choices that satisfy the habit's intention but are more desirable alternatives.
3. Next, ask yourself what you will have to give up tomorrow when, you stop this habit. The habit may be giving you some short-term benefit that you will be giving up or trading out for a better alternative.
4. Finally, ask yourself what you will have to start doing tomorrow when, you stop this habit. You might need to face something, change something in your life, or make some new commitment once you stop this habit.

And remember! You don't have to change the habit today. And when you are ready, you don't have to do it alone. Working with a coach, licensed therapist, or medical professional can help make the change smoother.
