Institutions are not the solution!
Around the world, millions of people are institutionalized or invisible in their communities, barred from education, employment, health care and decent housing. They have committed no crime. They include people who have been abandoned at birth, warehoused in institutions, ostracized, isolated, even locked up in their own homes. Health and social welfare officials refer to them as people with “intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities.” Regardless of the label, they are socially excluded. INclude - The Mental Health Initiative promotes the rights of people who have been socially excluded to live in the community on an equal basis with others. In particular, we fight against institutionalization, enabling people not only to leave institutions but also to exercise their basic human rights: to work, to vote, to make their own decisions – to live the lives the rest of society takes for granted.
