Just a little reminder to stay the course.
Chronic pain had been part of my life for a long time.
Eventually those pains started to come and go.
Then they’d come back with a vengeance.
The process has been anything, but linear. I can say, without a doubt, that I’ve never felt this good.
If you’re stuck in the pain cycle, keep going. Healing is never linear.

I played soccer as a kid. I remember there was this unwritten rule that if you were really good you wore white cleats.
Every once in a while, however, you’d see someone in white cleats who probably shouldn’t be wearing them.
It’s like they thought they could buy their way to being the best player. Obviously it didn’t work like that.
The same principle applies to your body. Buying a massage, or a a massage gun, or the latest and greatest CDB cream isn’t going to “fix” your problem.
Those things may offer information, which is extremely valuable, but not the solution in and of itself. Changing your movement patterns and posture are essential.
Don’t look for the quick fix. Root out the source, change the pattern, and balance the system.

Sometimes the message is clear. You had an injury and broke a bone. Your body is telling you to rest and heal.
Other times, the message is muted. The pain has been brought in by poor posture or movement mechanics.
Instead of getting mad at your body.
Pause.
Listen.
What is your body trying to tell you?

I never thought I would be a massage therapist. In fact, I remember thinking how weird of a profession it was… funny how life works.
Now, bodywork is my constant teacher.
It’s shown me how the body connects. How that pain in your shoulder can be related to your flat feet.
How we can’t look at anything in isolation… and that there is no quick fix.
Bodywork inspires me to constantly learn, perceive, question, and understand more deeply.
To look at the world with fresh eyes.
Bodywork is a constant inspiration and I hope I never stop learning more.
What inspires you?

Let’s keep it simple this Monday morning.
I love working with clients who are willing to put in the work to affect positive change in their bodies.
I’ve been working consistently with some clients experiencing persistent shoulder and neck pain, as well as some others with persistent low back pain.
The path has been anything but linear, but after 4-6 sessions the progress has been tremendous.
These clients have been employing some simple stretching techniques and paying attention to their posture during the interim between appointments.
Putting in the work outside the office is where the real magic occurs!

Our next meditation session will be on April 3rd from 6-7:15 pm. All are welcome.
And if you’re still hesitant about meditation… We try to make meditation enjoyable and relatable.
The analogy of listening to a piece of music always comes to mind.
When you listen to a song you love you don’t have to force yourself to listen to it, right? You simply let go and let it take you.
Meditation is the same. We just use a feeling instead of a song.

Acceptance is the first step toward healing.
It might sound counterintuitive, but if you can’t accept where you are, how can you expect to get where you’re going?
Pain and dysfunction have been a part of my life for longer than I’d like to admit.
Webbed feet, broken bones, sprains, poor body mechanics, muscle imbalance. You name it, I’ve got it or had it.
I used to complain about how it was unfair that I was born this way or that I had these injuries. (Just ask my wife 😆).
And honestly, I definitely still do… but the flip side of the coin is presence and acceptance of what is.
I would not be nearly as good at what I do without these daily lessons and reminders.
Everything can be your teacher. You just need to learn how to listen.

Getting one massage is kinda like contributing to your retirement one time and expecting to hit your financial goals… it’s unrealistic.
It takes consistency over a period of time to see things trend in a positive direction.
There may be times where things are a little volatile, or they seem like they’re heading in the wrong direction all together. (Have you seen the stock market recently!?) 📉
This is natural. The process of healing (particularly chronic pain or long standing orthopedic conditions) takes time.
But just like your retirement portfolio, it will trend in a positive direction over the long run.
Bodies like to heal. However, they heal on their own time and in their own way. Be consistent, trust the process, and you’re bound to find the results you seek.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been speaking with a client and they mention how painful foam rolling is.
“I just don’t do it because it hurts to much” they say…
If this is you, I’d recommend doing a little less pressure! I’d also highly recommend rolling. Saying it hurts too much is like saying you’re too dirty to shower… You need it more than anyone, ha!
Foam rolling should feel good. If you are at 10/10 the entire time, you’re not helping your body. In fact, you’re probably doing more harm then good.
Good foam rolling involves patience, listening, and a gentle approach. As you continue practicing you’ll learn exactly what your body needs.
Find a spot that hurts.
Bring the sensation up to a 4/10.
Wait.
Feel it release.
Find a new spot.
Repeat.
