Read this article and share it far and wide.

Our nonspeakers have language and abilities. They just can’t speak.

It’s all motor planning!! Focus on motor.

✨ Speech vs. Language in Kids ✨

Speech = how words sound (pronunciation, voice, fluency).

Language = what words mean and how we use them (vocabulary, grammar, understanding).

💡 A child may speak clearly but struggle to express ideas (language delay) — or know what they want to say but have trouble making the sounds (speech delay).

👶 Both are important for communication growth!

And just like that...

💔 Starting October 1, 2025, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will roll out a minimum 3% cut in reimbursement rates for all Medicaid providers — yes, that includes Speech services.

NC will cut Medicaid provider rates:

–3% general services
–8–10% inpatient care
–10% autism & behavioral therapy

These aren’t “extras” — they’re lifelines for single moms, families with multiples, and kids with disabilities. Fewer providers will mean fewer options and longer waits.

This isn’t just a budget cut — it’s a cut to access, dignity, and care.

Medicaid has the lowest reimbursement rate in our state, and all private insurance companies base their rates on the Medicaid rate. Once that is reduced, all private insurance companies will also lower their rates. This impact will be huge and financially devastating to medical professionals.

If you think...I don't have Medicaid, so it won't affect me. Think again. When your doctor's office closes, when your hospitals close...This WILL affect everyone. Medicaid and Medicare keep our medical industry afloat. Reduced rates mean fewer providers.

We’re Not Going Far — Just a Fresh New Space! 🏢✨

We have loved working alongside The Family OT, but we both need more space. It’s a good thing! But it means that we will be moving our office.

The Family OT will remain at 10 Regent Park Blvd.

Don’t worry, we will be right next door. We will adjust our schedules slightly to allow time for families to attend their scheduled OT sessions as needed.

To reach our new office, drive to the right of our current building and follow the parking lot around to the rear of the building. Follow the signs to drive straight up the hill. Our office is the first door on the left.

With any move, things may not be perfect at first.
We will do all we can to make this transition smooth for everyone.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.

This is a perfect example of how we "work" and "play" in speech therapy! May look like chaos or too many toys to some, but it's purposeful, meaningful and child-led. Anna added letter cards to support literacy while engaging in his interests. Words were spelled and ideas were shared. It's everything we want!

It’s Apraxia Awareness Month. The motor cortex not only is critical for speech it’s how we control our entire body. If there is a disconnect in the motor cortex and body movements you will have difficulty controlling all parts of your body. This is very common in nonspeakers. More to come…

Play Talk & Grow curates high quality, premium toys to engage your child and help them build speech and language skills. The toys meet all 5 criteria for the perfect toy: multiple pieces, perform actions, grow the imagination, build vocabulary/concepts, and be simple. Toys will not teach your child how to talk. They are the TOOLS we use to get them talking.

If you are concerned about your child’s speech, waiting to receive services, or wanting to do more at home, Play Talk & Grow can help you start TODAY. Call a Speech Therapist, schedule the evaluation, and then get started. Playing with a child that doesn’t respond is really hard! Many families struggle with how to interact with someone who doesn’t talk or show interest. There are so many things you can do to build their engagement and thus teach language. Learn how to play with your child and help them talk.
