The Reality of Indulgence without Intention: Enormous Holiday Waste
During the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period, Americans throw away more trash than any other time of year, amounting to 25 million tons of garbage.

What if we used this Holiday season to recalibrate? Evaluate our priorities and dreams as a society? This Holiday season is an opportunity for introspection and contemplation

- Give gifts that need no packaging like memberships, subscriptions, tickets, weekend getaways and gift certificates. Sign them up for a class in their interest  or donating to a local organizartion in their name. These presents are clutter-free and don’t add to the waste stream!
-Re-use
Find crestive ways to wrap presents: colorful pages torn from magazines, old maps, all pretty paper you have come across! You can alson avoid using paper entirely by using reusable decorative tins, baskets or boxes. Reusable cloth ribbons can be used in place of plastic bows. Make sure to unwrap gifts carefully and save bags for reuse next year!
If every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields!
-Conserve
The potential to waste food increases when preparing large meals during the holidays. Plan, shop and prep smart to keep good food from going bad. Have your dinner guests bring tupperware with them to share leftovers!
The U.S. uses more electricity during December than some countries use all year. Energy Star qualified LED lights last longer and are 90 percent more efficient than traditional Christmas lights. Remember to turn off lights, electronics and appliances when they aren’t in use and in the quiet of night .

We love to preach and practice radical self-care; but what about Community Care?
As oppressive systems have exhausted us onto buying into false self care that in retrospect and reality continue to make us sick (do you look at the ingredient lists? *vomit emoji), transform your practice to one of deeper connection, beyond the individual. 👐🏼

Rayna Smaller, a licensed social worker, therapist and founder of BrownGirl Space defines community care as “How we show up and create space for each other”, where those “share and create resources among one another and create dependable relationships." This can loos like sharing meals with friends who may be having a hard time, writing a card to someone experiencing loneliness or loss, sharing financial resources and aid offered in your area, developing relationships with your neighbors; there is so much we can do!🌀

Self-care and communal care must exist in tandem in order to optimize and propel us to a place of greater wellbeing. It’s fall yall! I have been a bit slow to post and share what’s up with The NOHM this year… as it goes all the things are in transition. Currently I am soaking up this sweet harvest from spring and summer past. Baskets are full, garden is pumping, herbal medicine is being made on the regular and the Appalachian ecology is bursting with life, like this golden rod stand here on my friends land. Sunshine is encapsulated in this showy flower and brings so much light to the cells and the soul.

So what’s up with the NOHMies? Many of us are still figuring that out. We’ve done two big festivals out and about in North America and a handful of local pop ups however there has been a shift in direction and like this golden rod flower the creative force and excitement comes and goes. What has been consistent is our online apothecary and our bar happenings in West AVL with our collab at . Open everyday with a magical menu of offerings, choice h**p flower and wellness products and weekly music on their fly patio Sunday afternoons. We’re elated to fill cups in Asheville on the regular and are steeping in what’s to come in the future.

Stay tuned as I’ll continue to post our pop ups and ventures on the road here. And excited to welcome a new nohmie to the team who is going to assist in bringing more of our past work to light through photos and videos to share here on this platform.

For now our hands are full of herbs and our hearts are bursting with passion for each of our own personal projects and pursuits. Sending mush love to you all! 🫶🏽
