Ebola Crisis Fund Update
As many of you know, we have been raising funds to support the families of the Ebola victims in the Jawei Chiefdom of Sierra Leone. We were asked to assist by our Parliamentary representative, Mr. Maada Momoh, back in late summer. At that time the need was for food and clothing. Since that time, the chiefs, district council and community formed an Ebola Survivors Committee. This committee is monitoring the needs of the survivors and making decisions about resources and aide.
Last week we sent $2,555 to Mr. Momoh that was raised by family, friends, and largely the Nursing Students Without Borders (NSWB) at Southern Oregon University. Originally, we anticipated that the funds would be used for food and clothing but the Ebola Survivors Committee determined that those needs were being met by other NGOs. Therefore they have decided to use the funds for the orphan children. Today I received an email from Maada and this is what he says:
“From our recent personal survey, we discovered that there are 65 Ebola Survivors (men, women and children) and 288 orphan children between 0-15 years of age in Jawie Chiefdom.
Since Unicef and some other International and Local Non Governmental Organizations have started the distribution of some relief supplies to the Ebola Survivors, and taking into consideration that there are also some Ebola Survivor Children amongst the 288 vulnerable orphan children Jawie Chiefdom, we have suggested to target all the 288 vulnerable orphan children in this first intervention.
Subsequent assistance will cover all the categories of the Ebola Survivors. Details report could be mail with pictures after I shall have returned from Jawie in a week time.”
While many of you anticipated that your donation would be spent on food and clothing specifically, we trust that they know what is needed most. Our agreements of absolute transparency and accountability make it possible for us to know that 100% of our donations are going to the intended recipients. So know that you have supported meeting basic needs and education of 288 orphaned children, some of who are Ebola survivors.
