Congratulations, Circle of Care Award recipients, Kristy Haglund and Dr. Gina Mysliwiec!

Kristy Haglund, Hospice nurse, and Dr. Gina Mysliwiec, Emergency Department physician, were given the Circle of Care Award after a patient's family member made a donation to the CMH Foundation in their names. Below is what the family member shared:

About Kristy:

"Kristy exudes a positive energy no matter the circumstance. From day one, she made all of us smile and laugh. From diagnosis to death, my dad was only with hospice for two months and 1 day.

"Kristy would walk in with a smile and greet dad first, and she'd inevitably be greeted back with an eye roll ... even during the last week. That connection allowed my dad, and the rest of us, that two months of precious time. I wish I could share more, and maybe one day I will, but it's still hard and so very sad. I will forever be grateful for the quality of life provided with such intimate care during those two months and one day."

About Dr. Gina:

"Dr. Gina was the second provider who attended to the care of my dad during a ED visit last summer. The attention and care provided by both allowed my dad to spend as little time as possible in the hospital, and that was valuable because he only lived 2 1/2 months after that visit because of a terminal diagnosis.

"As the doctor, is it harder or easier living in a small town? I mention this because, as the daughter of the patient, I also know you personally. So, when we walked into your hospital, and I couldn't talk through my sobs, it didn't matter because you answered my unspoken questions, you took care of the details of a transfer that would lead to more answers, and you did so with a force of strength.

"Then, when my dad was in Portland, the hospital staff lost the transfer paperwork delaying treatment an entire day. You intervened and were on the phone waiting to talk to the provider (not anyone else) to ensure the mistake was resolved and the process moved forward. I will forever be grateful that my dad's last visit to the local hospital was with you. He knew he was so well taken care of and that his family would continue to be well-served by the same person well beyond his time."

Congratulations, and great work, Kristy and Dr. Gina!

The BuildCMH Expansion Project has been in the works for several years. Throughout the planning process, we've sought feedback from frontline caregivers, providers, patients, leadership, community members and strategic partners, such as OHSU.

Their feedback has been invaluable as we seek to improve our community's health care at CMH.

When Shawn Teevin was a defensive end for the Knappa High School Loggers football team, he wasn't told not to hit head-on-head. One bad hit resulted in a broken neck, and he recalls going to the old Columbia Hospital for treatment.

Now, as he and his wife are major donors to the BuildCMH Expansion Project, which will triple the size of CMH, he says the expansion is what the community needs in a big way.

Grateful patients often ask us how they can say "thank you" to the CMH caregivers who provided excellence during a hospital stay or clinic visit. With Circle of Care Awards, patients give a donation to the CMH Foundation in a caregiver's name, commending them for a job well done.

If you know of a caregiver that has provided excellent service or treatment, show your thankfulness at https://www.columbiamemorial.org/giving/cmh-foundation/ or email foundationinfo@columbiamemorial.org.

Pile drilling work for the BuildCMH Expansion Project is now complete. Concrete pours for the building's foundation began on the heels of the pile drilling. This is the concrete lattice or pile caps and grade beams that you see from the West Lobby.

Skanska Project Engineer, Emily Davidsen spent the past month creating a replica of the BuildCMH Expansion Project in her evening ceramics class at Clatsop Community College. Using the blueprints, she created the model to spec and truly brought the design to life.

The BuildCMH Expansion Project was featured by KFF Health News recently in an article about the loss of FEMA BRIC grant funding.

You can read the article here: https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/tsunami-shelter-oregon-hospital-fema-funding-cut-lawsuit/

The article was written before a federal judge ruled last week that the money cannot be withheld from BRIC grant recipients, though the outcome of that lawsuit is still to be seen.

After the Trump administration cut the funding, hospital officials are building anyway, saying waiting is too risky. A judge ruled Dec. 11 that the administration unlawfully ended the pro...

Inspiring Transformational Philanthropy

About 137 years ago a group of citizens realized that a hospital was a critical need in the community. They raised money and came together to create a resource that went beyond walls to care for those needing health and hope—in the present and the future. They created a resource that grew and expanded to help thousands of people they never met. Today, generous donors continue to protect and expand that mission to develop health resources that will live beyond them. That will continue to serve a growing, thriving region. With your philanthropy, we will gift our present and future with advanced healthcare.
