Happy Labor Day weekend everybody! I hope you're enjoying your day and this beautiful weather!

Since the temps have been dropping, we've been doing a lot more outdoors with the kids. We especially like to do group therapy outside. These two factors--being in nature, and being in a group of friends--help calm the nervous system and allow kids (and adults!) to open up more easily. These kids have been able to form close friendships with each other, so that makes it even more comfortable.

Hopefully we can all learn from them and take some time this holiday weekend to get outdoors with loved ones.

Going on trips to unfamiliar places can be overwhelming for kids, especially for those with autism. Overstimulation can quickly lead to meltdowns. We're fortunate to have a staff of caring therapists giving their undivided attention, and a whole group of familiar friends, to tag along and make the experience less scary.

We love taking the kids to explore new places! They had a blast at the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery. Having positive novel experiences like this can make it easier--even exciting--to go to new places in the future. And hopefully that can make visits to highly stimulating places--whether it's a fun destination or a simple trip to the grocery store--a little easier next time.

The weather this week has been beautiful, so we've been playing outside with the kids as much as possible! Playing in nature is a big part of our practice. A Taiwanese study involving teachers, volunteers, and parents of Autistic children was done where children with Autism were regularly engaged in outdoor play activities. The study showed there were 7 key areas of improvement in Autistic children involved (Chang and 44 Chang, 2010), these were:
social interaction
communication
behavior
emotion
cognition
sensory issues
physical activity
With improvements to Autistic children’s emotional state and cognitive ability being the biggest improvements made.

Equine therapy is so much more than riding horses. Our students get the chance to pet, clean, brush, and lead our horses as well as ride them.

A 2015 study shows that horse therapy reduces irritability and hyperactivity in participants and also increases word fluency. The researcher says, “There is growing evidence that human-animal interventions can improve emotional health and social wellness in youth, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder. Our study was rigorous and the findings remarkable.” Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6054954/

Our Learning Center is our pride and joy. The yurt, where we spend much of our time, is the perfect space for therapy and play. The open, light, rounded layout allows kids to feel free in this space, which is critical for meaningful and sustained engagement and growth.

According to a 2024 study, the most significant predictor of school participation for young autistic people is the school environment. Noise, lighting, and other sensory factors can cause stress which leads autistic students to disengage. Pivot Point's Learning Center is designed to support children with both hyper and hypo-sensitivities to sensory stimuli. Source: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13623613231225490
