The Nine Herbs Charm & the Power of Nine ✨
Long before numerology charts and modern astrology apps, people turned to story, song, and sacred numbers to understand the world around them. One such story comes to us from the Anglo-Saxon period of early medieval Europe: the Nine Herbs Charm.
This ancient healing verse, written down over a thousand years ago, calls upon nine plants : Mugwort, Plantain, Chamomile, Nettle, Crab Apple, Thyme, Fennel, Chervil, and Betony. The charm weaves them together in poetry as medicine for wounds and illness, and as guardians of balance between body, spirit, and the natural world. The number nine itself was seen as a deeply significant representation of completeness, cycles fulfilled, and protection against what was harmful or out of order. Though the Nine Herbs Charm belongs to its own time, it offers a glimpse into how our ancestors understood healing: through rhythm, repetition, and reverence for nature’s patterns.
This makes the number nine especially meaningful on September 9th (a date known in modern folklore as the 999 Portal). Whether it is seen as a mystical opening or simply as an echo of old numerological ideas, the symbolism remains the same: nine is a number of closure and renewal. It asks us to pause, reflect, and honor the wisdom that comes when one cycle ends and another begins.
Like the old charm, it is less about literal magic and more about remembering that our lives, too, move in patterns. It also offers an opportunity to remember that endings, while bittersweet, are always the doorway to something new.
