My life has really changed in a year.šŸ’— 14 months ago a chunk of my life had been shattered. I felt so uncertain as I could not see how it was going to work out. I trusted the promise of God that it was for my greatest good.

Romans 8:28 Colossians 1:17 1Corinthians 12:6

And it was.šŸ’–
Now here we are, another year older, another year wiser, & another year of living by faith. I learned to love myself more, demand more of myself in the right ways, be courageous in new ways, and be disciplined enough to work for more in each area of my life. God is so so good. His faithfulness always amazes me.šŸ’œ

Thank you for all the lovely birthday wishes!! I read every single one.
I’m also taking another social media pause; one month this time. My PM’s are still on.🫶

Day 3 of our epic birthday road trip!
We hiked the lovely Bluedon Forest with Cari Logsdon Reif. Then, Kami Berger McMahan took us to an Oky original- Hideaway Pizza for dinner. We got to stand in the center of the universe & we saw Teddy Swims in concert. Oklahoma people are some of the nicest and happiest people. They were for sure the happiest we met on this tripā¤ļø

Wouldn’t we all love to be born with the best and strongest ā€œmental toughnessā€œ?
Well, we aren’t. Lol But it can be developed! šŸ’Ŗ

Interestingly mental toughness is built through our daily actions and decisions. These daily actions and decisions are actually our habits. In fact, research suggests 40% of our behaviors each day are habitual. That means 40% of what we do, we aren’t even thinking about. It just happens. Do you remember brushing your teeth this morning? or have you ever driven somewhere and not realized how you got there? This means if we want to create a new habit, we need to be intentional, deliberate, and persistent.

The habits of mentally tough people look like setting intentions, challenging themselves, taking calculated risks, finding the good, setting goals, and diligence in action towards their goals.

What do your habits look like? Do your existing habits support mental toughness? How do you respond to stress? How do you respond to things out of your control? How do you talk to yourself? (insert personal share that Im working on this one specificallyšŸ’—) Do your habits support the life you want to live?

if you want to follow along the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be diving deeper into this topic. Grab some pen and paper and let’s go!

ā€œMental Toughnessā€ is said to be one’s capacity to handle stressors, challenges, & curve balls while maintaining our best self and abilities. Furthermore, this trait of mental toughness is said to show up when it is time to rebound and respond after these tough circumstances.

We see mental toughness showing up all around us through emotional resiliency, grit, patience, motivation, positivity, well managed stress, self awareness, risks, focus, & confidence. How does it show up for you? Can you pinpoint people or scenarios where grit and these characteristics showed up?

For me, I’ve been super aware and intrigued by the concept of not just surviving, but THRIVING through life and it’s challenges. I find myself asking, ā€œwhat am I to learn from this?ā€ ā€œHow can I get better?ā€ ā€œWhere do I need to adjust?ā€ I keep going after the activity that scares me or makes me uncomfortable. Then I assess (with my coach) and get after it again.

Fortunately, mental toughness is like a muscle and can be strengthened. The more we strengthen it, the more we gain in confidence, connection, increased performance, & resiliency. I sometimes think people want this, but they really don’t know how. I know I didn’t.

My top resource for developing mental toughness is through ā€˜performance coaching’ or ā€˜mindset coaching’. I’ve been in a community of the BEST for six years now. Their history of winning grows every single day, too. I’m happy to share them with you. I have shifted from survival and a level 2 of mental toughness to thriving in my life and working at a level 9.

What about you? How’s your mental toughness? Are you where you want to be? Are you surviving or thriving?

Checklists and alarms are my best friend!šŸ¤“

Here’s my current favorite app for keeping me focused and on task each day. I update this each morning and do a simple brain dump of the things I need to remember and WANT to remember. This is how I set the intention for my day. This tool allows me to own my day and stay in productive mode more.

Bonus: each time you check a box, your brain rewards you with some dopamine, which motivates you to keep goingšŸ™Œ

What is your current favorite app? Leave me a screen shot so I can check it out too!

Here’s some Fun Fact Friday for ya! There’s a back story therešŸ˜‚

I was actually born in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was born at the hospital where my mother was a nurse. It was always exciting as a child to drive past that place. We still have family and friends in Indy and do not do a great job of visiting them enough. There are plans for that to change though.šŸ’

Comparison is thief of joyšŸ’

Here are 3 different cardio sessions I completed recently. The photos are from the half way point. At first glance, the most common assumption is, ā€œshe got faster!ā€ The truth is, my fastest time was recorded first and as I’ve progressed with my training, it *appears* I’ve regressed… based on the info purposefully providedšŸ˜„

Here’s the thing- this is why we don’t judge ourselves against others and why we simply don’t judge others either. We have NO CLUE what metric to use to do the comparing. What’s the goal or intention for your workout and are you sticking to that? Do your thoughts ever wonder what others are thinking as they pass you? Does that every distract you?

In my example here, my metric was heart rate. In the first photo, I was at maximum heart rate. In the second, I was in performance. And in the third photo, I upped my resistance 3 notches and stayed close to my endurance heart rate zone. If I (or anyone else) were to judge these by distance and/or time, they would think I slowed down or let myself off easy. Time and distance are common metrics for
cardio, but they don’t tell the whole story. For me, each workout was progressively challenging based on my intentions.

If you need help setting intentions for your workouts, let’s chat. It is an important part of the process.
