A Celebration of Freedom!
Today, we celebrate the emancipation of African Americans who had been enslaved in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed almost two and a half years earlier, the news of this important decision finally reached the last African American slaves on June 19th, 1865 — what we now call Juneteenth!

As the National Museum of African American History and Culture says, Juneteenth is “a time to share stories of resilience, resistance, and liberation, and to uplift Black joy.”

We hope you take this time to reflect on the history of enslaved African Americans and celebrate the rich culture of Black communities.
