I've been seeing alot of mommas, FTM and mommas of multiples inquiring about how to make their babies (under 1) independent. I understand that the system we currently live in doesn't foster an environment for us to really bond with our children. Some of us have to work, own businesses and have other children to tend to. It's not easy to just drop everything and mother. HOWEVER, nothing is more important that your little one's needs, other than your own. Your baby is gestating on the outside of the womb as well. For the first few months they don't even recognize that they are a separate entity from you. Creating independence relies on a secure emotional attachment and that comes with lost sleep for mommas, full arms, contact naps, endless nursing. We are teaching our little ones what safety feels like. We are teaching them how to be whole beings and absolutely nothing about it is easy. Our first lesson in mothering is to surrender. The to-do lists never end, so it's okay to not grt to the chores, it's okay to ask for help, it's okay to cry and be frustrated by the constant needs. We are humans experiencing an expansion no-one can really provide a blueprint for. Growth is painful, both physically and mentally. Mothering isn't meant to be done alone and unfortunately alot of us are mothering alone. If you have mom friends please co-mother. We are all in the thick of it trying to survive the day wondering if anyone else is feeling what we are feeling. Less mom shaming and more mom sharing.

Well, well, well. Guess who's back? Back again, Asia's back, lol. Peace family. As I am coming back into my birth worker self, I have had a plethora of downloads when it comes to my role in this work. I wear many hats, I possess many skills. But the one thing I do best is listen and encourage. This work is so much more than catching babies and touching placentas. I am a professional space holder, and it's about damn time I acted like it. Sometimes you don't need a doula, sometimes you need a sista friend to witness your humanness who also has a good grasp of the technical side of things. Allow me to hold you. Allow me to create a safe and private space for your questions, concerns, or tears. Bring your babies, bonnets and partner and let's Kee.

Happy Black Maternal Health Week. Much praise to the black mamas who held up a big middle finger to unsupportive medical staff, people who fill your mind with negative birth outcomes, who didn't hold space for you when you chose to birth outside the hospital, to those who didn't support you. The black mama is magic, without us there is nothing.
