Black man joy!
Looking into the mirror, I see a pigmentation that’s rarely seen or even seen!
I see the many faces of the men who fought for me to be here Malcolm X, martin Luther king, Fredrick Douglas, W.E.B Du Bois, and many others.
So I smile because I have black man joy!
Knowing that they fought tremendous battles for me to get here! I look into the mirror, and I say, “you are worthy, and no one can steal your black man's joy” I give it another swing like Muhammad Ali.”
To know that every minute somewhere in the USA, A black man who looks like me joy has been taken. Either by death by su***de because they can no longer handle the pressures of this world.
Or gun down by our counterparts and, even worse, someone who looks like our own. What’s a man to think in a world of unfairness? Where should my black boy joy be found?
Knowing that because of my skin, hair, and dialect, I’m already in a battle because of my image. What’s a man to do to find his joy.”
Fighting just as hard to be accepted and love the American dream, I attended college and purchased a home, hoping this would be enough to allow me to feel overall joy!
But to see my community hurting each other and disappointing our ancestors and ancestors who fought for us to be here.
The joy feels like pain. The smile becomes a frown because of the tears and voices of Trayvon martin, Ahmad Aubrey, Breyona Taylor, George Floyd, and Trye Nicholas. I stare into the mirror, hearing and feeling their cry for help.
I know speaking about trauma in my community can be seen as weak or lack of masculinity. But what’s a black man supposed to do to find his joy?
Speak up and speak out. Give it another swing. Giving up or giving in is not an option. In times of need, we have to pull together.
It’s not many that look like you! So lean on the ones who do! Please encourage them to find their joy! Uplift them and allow them to embrace the pleasures of this life!
Tell them it’s more to life than the streets, gang violence, being angry at the world! This life gives you one chance to write your story, and why leave the earth knowing someone took your black man's joy?
