Angelman syndrome is a complex genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system. Characteristic features of this condition include delayed development, intellectual disability, severe speech impairment, and problems with movement and balance (ataxia). Most affected children also have recurrent seizures (epilepsy) and a small head size (microcephaly). Delayed development becomes noticeable by the age of 6 to 12 months, and other common signs and symptoms usually appear in early childhood.

Children with Angelman syndrome typically have a happy, excitable demeanor with frequent smiling, laughter, and hand-flapping movements. Hyperactivity and a short attention span are common. Most affected children also have difficulty sleeping and need less sleep than usual.

With age, people with Angelman syndrome become less excitable, and the sleeping problems tend to improve. However, affected individuals continue to have intellectual disability, severe speech impairment, and seizures throughout their lives.

Pediatric tracheostomies are performed when a child is unable to pass enough air into his or her lungs. This can happen at any age, even in babies, for a variety of reasons. A surgeon might recommend the procedure if your child experiences:

-Congenital defects that limit airflow through the nose, mouth or throat, including craniofacial syndromes such as Treacher Collins, Crouzon and Pierre Robin Sequence

-Neurologic impairments that affect normal breathing or cause upper airway obstruction, such as cerebral palsy or congenital central hypoventilation syndrome

-Lung conditions such as chronic lung disease or subglottic stenosis

-Trauma to the airway

-Airway blockages (such as tumors or swelling from infections)

-Prolonged intubation (placement of a breathing tube through the mouth)

The doctor may also recommend a tracheostomy if your child is using a ventilator. For example, some babies who are prematurely born may need a ventilator or oxygen assistance for six months or more. As soon as your child is medically cleared, the surgeon will remove the trach.

What is Lennox-Gastaut syndrome?
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is a severe form of epilepsy. Seizures begin in early childhood, usually before the age of 4 years.

Children, adolescents, and adults with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome have multiple types of seizures that vary among individuals. Common seizure types include:

Tonic seizures (stiffening of the body, upward eye gaze, dilated pupils, and altered breathing patterns)
Atypical absences (staring spells)
Atonic seizures (brief loss of muscle tone, which could cause abrupt falls)
Myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks)
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (muscle stiffness and rhythmic jerking)
There may be periods of frequent seizures mixed with relatively seizure-free periods. Although not always present at the onset of seizures, most people living with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome experience some degree of impaired intellectual functioning or information processing, along with developmental delays and behavioral disturbances. A particular pattern of brain electric activity can be seen using electroencephalogram (EEG).

Some kids have medical problems that make it hard for them to get enough nutrition by mouth. A gastrostomy tube (also called a G-tube) is a tube inserted through the belly that brings nutrition directly to the stomach. It's one of the ways doctors can make sure kids who have trouble eating get the fluid and calories they need.

A surgeon puts in a G-tube during a short procedure called a gastrostomy. The G-tube can stay in place for as long as a child needs it.

Kids who have had a gastrostomy (ga-STROSS-teh-mee) can get back to their normal activities fairly quickly after they have healed.

While the symptoms of a brain injury in children are similar to those experienced by adults, the functional impact can be very different. Children are not little adults; the brain of a child is still developing. The cognitive impairments of children with brain injury may not be immediately obvious after the injury, but may become apparent as the child gets older. These implications can create lifetime challenges for living and learning for children, their families, schools, and communities.

Spina bifida is a condition that affects the spine and is usually apparent at birth. It is a type of neural tube defect (NTD).

Spina bifida can happen anywhere along the spine if the neural tube does not close all the way. When the neural tube doesn’t close all the way, the backbone that protects the spinal cord doesn’t form and close as it should. This often results in damage to the spinal cord and nerves.

Spina bifida might cause physical and intellectual disabilities that range from mild to severe.
