✨ Word of the Week: Intraverbal ✨

Intraverbals are conversations in action! They happen when your child responds to words with words, like answering questions, finishing songs, or taking part in a back-and-forth exchange.

✅ Example: You say, “Twinkle, twinkle, little…” and your child says, “star!”

Why it matters: Intraverbals build social skills and help children join in conversations.

✨ Preferences vs. Reinforcers ✨

Parents often hear these terms in ABA, but they aren’t the same thing.
Preference = something your child enjoys (snack, toy, bubbles, tablet).
Reinforcer = something that not only is enjoyed, but also increases the chance a behavior will happen again.

👉 Example: Your child might like bubbles (preference), but if giving bubbles after they follow a direction makes them follow directions more often, bubbles are working as a reinforcer.

Remember: All reinforcers are preferences, but not all preferences are reinforcers.

Understanding this difference helps us choose the best supports for growth and learning.

🌱 Green, Yellow, and Red Zones: Understanding Your Child’s Regulation 🌱
By Anna Kinnaird, BCBA

When a child is calm, their brain is ready to learn and connect. When they are dysregulated, their brain shifts into survival mode. Knowing the zones helps us respond in ways that support regulation and growth.

🟢 Green Zone: Calm and Ready to Learn
Looks like: relaxed body, steady breathing, focused, engaged
Best supports: predictable routines, positive praise, engaging activities
Sensory tools: fidgets, chewable jewelry, movement breaks
💡 Catch them doing the right thing and praise it right away.

🟡 Yellow Zone: Heightened Alertness
Looks like: fidgeting, louder voice, fast movements, worry or frustration
Best supports: small steps, movement or sensory breaks, clear simple language, choices
Sensory tools: wall pushups, animal walks, big stretches, Theraband on a chair, deep pressure squeezes, chewy snacks if appropriate
💡 Pause and pivot. Shift to something easier or take a break to help them succeed.

🔴 Red Zone: Fight, Flight, or Freeze
Looks like: crying, yelling, aggression, running away, shutting down
Best supports: remove demands, stay calm, validate feelings, offer comforting items, allow time to recover
Sensory tools: weighted blanket, rocking chair, noise-cancelling headphones, dim lights, quiet space
💡 You cannot teach new skills in the Red Zone. Focus on co-regulation and helping your child return to calm before trying again.

⚡ Remember:
Green Zone is the time to practice coping skills
Yellow Zone is not the time for big demands
Red Zone is the time for safety and connection

How We Measure Your Child’s Progress in ABA 📊

At Hidden Talents ABA, we know that tracking progress is key to helping your child thrive. We use three main types of measurement to get the clearest picture of growth:

✅ Direct Measurement – Watching and recording behaviors in real-time. This is the most accurate way to see what’s happening, but it requires us to be present during the behavior.
✅ Indirect Measurement – Gathering information from you, teachers, and other caregivers after the fact. It’s easier to collect but can sometimes be influenced by memory or personal perspective.
✅ Product Measurement – Looking at the results of a behavior (like completed homework or a finished puzzle). It’s great for showing outcomes but doesn’t always tell us how the result happened.

Using a combination of these methods helps us truly understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and progress—so we can make the most effective plan for them. 💙

Curious about how we could measure and support your child’s goals? Send us a message today.

📚 Getting Ready for Back-to-School Season? Here Are a Few Tips to Help with the Transition:

Transitions can be tough, but a little prep can go a long way. Here are some ways to help ease your child back into the school routine:

✅ Talk About It Early: Start having casual conversations about going back to school. Talk about what their day might look like, who they’ll see, and what they might do.

✅ Ease Into the Routine: Begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up times a couple of weeks in advance to match the school schedule.

✅ Use Visual Supports: Calendars, visual schedules, or social stories can help your child feel more prepared and in control.

✅ Practice the Morning Routine: Do some practice runs of getting dressed, packing lunch, and leaving the house on time.

✅ Visit the School (if possible): A walk-through of the building or meeting the teacher ahead of time can help reduce anxiety.

Remember, every child is different. Start with what works for your family and build from there. You’ve got this! 💪

💡 Ever wonder how ABA helps increase helpful behaviors?

It often comes down to reinforcement. That just means something happens after a behavior that makes your child more likely to do it again.

✅ Positive reinforcement means adding something your child enjoys, like praise, a toy, or a snack.
❌ Negative reinforcement means removing something your child doesn’t like, like turning off a loud noise or ending a tough task.

Both are tools to help build skills and reduce frustration. The key is finding what works best for your child.

Have questions about how we use reinforcement during sessions? Let us know in the comments.
