Our Story - The Walking Project

The Walking Project is an organization focused on helping those that are suffering from a Spinal Cord Injury learn to walk again. We want to help patients and their families navigate the resources available and learn from experts on what it takes to heal after a SCI. We too have been affected by Spinal Cord Injury, and we want to share what we’ve learned throughout our journey with everyone else that is also struggling to find the path to walking again. Whether it’s learning about cutting edge medical advancements, learning how to continue the healing and therapy process at home, or simply hearing the stories of other spinal cord injury patients and their journey through the healing process, The Walking Project will be here to guide you on your journey and raise money to find a cure for paralysis due to Spinal Cord Injury.

In March 2019, our mother and sister were in a car accident on I-20 outside of Atlanta, GA. Our sister was left with a concussion and other minor injuries, while our mom was left paralyzed from the chest down. Our mom was airlifted from the crash to Grady hospital, where she was told that she had a T5 fracture and that they would have to undergo emergency surgery to save her spine. That night changed our family's lives forever. Since then, our mom has been fighting every single day to get her legs back. She spends hours on end in the therapy gym working with many different doctors, PTs, OTs, nurses, and other caregivers who have dedicated their time and energy to helping my mom achieve her goal of walking again. She wakes up every day with the same radiant smile that we’ve always known, and you will never hear her complain about anything. She is the most positive and strong woman you’ll ever met - an inspiration to us and to countless others. The road to recovery ahead of us may still be long, but we have no doubt that if anyone can do it, our mom will. Our family will be there every step of the way, and it has become our mission to help her and the many others who are going through a similar situation to fully heal and recover.

Throughout our journey of learning to walk again, we have met some unbelievable people. We’ve heard some incredible success stories, learned about exciting new therapies, and met with some of the leading researchers to understand what it takes to learn to walk again. We’ve read endless articles, research journals, and books; we’ve spoken with some of the best doctors, therapists, and researchers; and we’ve connected with some of the most inspiring and dedicated people who have made it their life mission to cure paralysis. We wanted to share what we’ve learned with the world and help others on their journey to learn to walk again. Join us in our new project – The Walking Project – and let’s work together to learn to walk again.
