The absence of conflict does not mean the presence of intimacy…

As a therapist I can’t tell you how often I see couples on the verge of divorce who tell me “well we weren’t fighting about anything so I thought we were ok”. What people don’t talk about is that often when one spouse is considering leaving they stop fighting and trying to find ways to connect to thier partner, as the connection they had to that person slowly dies. The other partner may interpret that as the relationship has gotten better with the absence of conflict, when in reality it just indicates the partners have accepted that the relationship is over.

I ask couples all the time to check the “emotional temperature” of the relationship often throughout each week by asking your partner question like…

“How do you see our marriage?”
“Are there things I don’t do in our relationship that you feel like you need?”
“How can I love you better today?”

Friends, I don’t say this lightly, but take a hard look at your relationships and choose not to take them for granted. Long lasting loving marriages dont just happen, but they are grown in an environment of communication, forgiveness, compromise and commitment.

In the age of social media, I encourage you to put your phone down and look in your partners eyes and see if you see an intimate connection shinning back, or the blank look of disconnect and surrender.
