Falon here and I know, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted content here. To be totally honest and transparent, this year was one of my most difficult years professionally and financially. I had to take on caregiver responsibilities for my father, and I became burnt out with all the roles I needed to fill.

In March, I moved back to my hometown and accepted a full time SLP position at a local preschool. This was perfect since I love all things early intervention! Slowly but surely, I am beginning to remember my “why” for starting Speaking of the Matter Therapy Services. You’ll be seeing more from me this upcoming year! In the meantime, check out these little glimpses of 2024 for SOTMTS!

We offer consultation and advocacy services to assist parents with understanding components to their child's Individual Education Plan (IEP), including placement, accommodations, goals, related services, etc. These services prepare parents/caregivers for IEP meeting(s) to ensure their concerns are not only heard and understood, but also addressed.

Since this year's theme of Better Hearing and Speech Month is "Building a Strong Foundation", we wanted to share information about the areas of the brain that are important for speech, language, and hearing!
What happens if one or more of these lobes is injured, damaged, or abnormal?
Symptoms of brain damage depends upon the severity of the damage, but common symptoms include:
-speaking slowly or slurring words
-difficulty being understood due to weak speech muscles
-trouble with repeating words you just heard
-difficulty understanding what others say or what you read
-problems finding the words to say when needed
-difficulty paying attention, remembering, and learning new information
-difficulty planning, setting goals, and problem solving

Since this year's theme of Better Speech and Hearing Month is "Building a Strong Foundation", we wanted to bring clarity to a misconception that confuses people everyday. Are speech and language the same thing? No, there are distinct differences between the two and understanding the difference is important when considering the right approach to speech-language therapy.
Speech is the sound of spoken language and includes the formation of a sound, the nature of the sound quality, and the rhythm and flow of the sound. Language is the words we use and how we use them to share ideas and communicate our needs/wants. What a word means, how to combine words into a sentence, and how to use words are components of language.
As children develop and begin to form sounds and creative word associations, their development enables them to express what they want, how they feel, and how they interact with their environment. Speech & Language both provide children with the proper tools to accomplish this.

We are celebrating Better Speech and Hearing Month the whole month of May!
This year’s theme is “Building a Strong Foundation” which is so befitting. There are so many people who aren’t aware of the benefits of speech-language pathology and audiology services. So here at Speaking of the Matter Therapy Services, we are going to share facts and resources to bring awareness of the numerous disorders & conditions that SLPs and Audiologists address daily with patients, students, colleagues, and family members.
