Today, my client had collected sticks before I showed up, so we built a tic-tac-toe board right there on the ground. Leaves and acorns became our game pieces, and we incorporated our speech targets right in!

Play doesn’t have to be planned or perfect—it just has to connect with the child in front of you. 💬✨

Parent tip: Next time you’re outside, let your child lead the way—you might be surprised how much learning sneaks into play.

I’m working with a two-year-old who LOVES purple, so I prepped one of my go-to therapy activities. Gather a bunch of objects in their favorite color. 💜 This simple strategy gets them excited and engaged, and it’s an easy way to incorporate all sorts of language activities and targets throughout our session.

I put them all in a closed container to build anticipation as we visually scan what is inside. We can target requesting to open the container, labeling the objects, putting together two words (purple + object), put them into categories, or discuss the function of each object. All while PLAYING! 😊

We’ve been talking about SNOW all week! ❄️

After our snow day in Georgia, the kids now have real-life experiences to connect to our speech sessions! Learning feels so much more meaningful when it’s tied to what they’ve experienced firsthand.

This interactive snow-themed book has been perfect for building early language skills:

• Clothing vocabulary: hat, gloves, scarf
• Body parts: hands, feet, nose
• Core words: in, on, out, get, put, more
• Basic concepts: hot/cold
• Actions: scoop, throw, build, zip
• Utterance length: putting words together

Just wanted to 🫧pop🫧 in this Friday to chat about toys—something many parents are asking me about this holiday season!

I have a lot of favorite therapy toys, but my #1 tip is to focus on how we play, not what we play with. No specific toy or app will magically boost your child’s language—it’s all about the connection 🥰.

Before you shop, here are 4 things to consider:
1️⃣ Does this toy match my child’s age range and development? (Check the box for age suggestions!)
2️⃣ What types of play does YOUR child enjoy? Cause-and-effect, visual components, sound-making, sorting, opening/hiding, pretend play, or hands-on arts and crafts?
3️⃣ How can you, as the parent, join in or adapt the play? Your interaction is the magic ingredient!
4️⃣ Can this toy be used in more than one way? Open-ended toys offer endless possibilities.

Remember, it’s not about having the perfect toy—it’s about creating quality connections together. 🥰
