A landmark study in 2015, and the subsequent update to guidelines in 2017 for introducing peanut to infants, has resulted in a dramatic drop in the number of children developing peanut allergy. Although this is fantastic news, experts stress the importance of assessing your baby's risk for peanut allergy and adhering to guidance on when and how to introduce peanut containing products based on that risk assessment.

Children with allergic conditions like severe eczema and/or egg allergy should be evaluated by a board certified allergist and receive guidance on when and how to introduce allergenic foods like peanut and egg. Siblings of peanut allergy patients should start early peanut introduction as well except in those with moderate to severe eczema or another food allergy.

Additionally, for the 2% of children with peanut allergies there are treatments that can reduce the risk of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. These can be discussed with one of the food allergy experts at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma.

A study that upended medical practice by recommending feeding babies peanut products early to prevent allergies has had a big effect in the real world.
