“Mental health conditions were the leading underlying cause of maternal deaths between 2017 and 2019, with white and Hispanic women most likely to die from su***de or drug overdose, while cardiac problems were the leading cause of death for Black women.”

I don’t know why this shocked me because it’s not at all surprising, but still…

More than half of these deaths occur well after the mom leaves the hospital. To save lives, mothers need more support in the "fourth trimester, that time after the baby is born," one researcher says.

I'm seeing people becoming more curious about the role of alcohol in their lives as people emerge from the isolation of the pandemic and begin to socialize more. Becoming more aware of motivation to drink helps to determine healthy lifestyle choices around alcohol use.

As the landscape of the pandemic has shifted to allow a return to more normal socializing and scheduling, people are having to intentionally evaluate how alcohol fits into their lives. When someone asks the question “Am I drinking too much? a common suggestion is to try abstaining from alcohol use

Check out that I recorded while sick (not COVID!)
Loved connecting with as we talk about families and boundaries and how to best enjoy your loved ones and the holidays. It was such a pleasure talking about how to take care of your mental health during the holidays and ways to find support in doing that. Remember, boundaries are put in place not to push others away, but to ensure you can comfortably keep others near!

Appreciating a foggy morning walk
I started going the five-minute journal which is a guided start and end to the day. One of the morning questions is “what would make today great” and I wrote “taking a walk” so I got to work a little early and knocked it out. It’s working...at least on day two!

New limit recommended for moderate drinkers- recommended one drink per day, down from two for men to decrease risk of disease including cancers and liver disease. Not all are in agreement. Most of the folks I work with in my office are looking to reduce binge-drinking behavior which some believe should be the focus.

A federal committee’s recommendation for new U.S. dietary guidelines comes as a 20-year rise in Americans’ drinking accelerates during the pandemic.

Finished a four-day attachment and emotion focused therapy training at Ascend Recovery. Just some of the things I learned and remembered: people who bring their whole hearts to therapeutic work are courageous badasses, when we challenge ourselves to know ourselves better the people we help will benefit, families and individuals impacted by addiction deserve innovations and refinement in how care is administered, and we’re all in this together. I’m grateful to Ascend Recovery for outfitting this Austinite with clothes befitting Utah fall because I definitely don’t own these items and for introducing me to the other love of my life, Willow the horse. I’m excited to bring everything I’ve learned and experienced back to my colleagues and I’m very grateful for opportunities to learn and grow in my work.

For folks who are curious about therapy or like stories about growth, change, and humanity— this is a solid read/listen. Really enjoying this therapist’s take on her work and life and how weirdly those two intersect for a person in the business of therapy.

Excellent video that describes how our early attachments with caregivers affect our bodies' biology. It describes how insecure attachment creates inflammation that can damage our bodies over time. AND I particularly like that it show research that indicates we can work on our attachment strategies to improve health!

In 1958, psychologist John Bowlby pioneered "attachment theory," the idea that the early bond between parent and child is critical to a child's emotional dev...
