✨Risks of Medical Tourism🙅🏻♀️✨ My sweet patient has been on a JOURNEY and allowed me to share her story. She had a cosmetic lower blepharoplasty in Korea which was reportedly uncomplicated. When she came back to the US, her right lower eyelid started turning outward about 1 month post-op. She suffered for weeks and was too embarrassed to leave her house before finally coming to see me. She had developed scar tissue causing tethering of her lower lid (called a cicatricial ectropion). Using a combination of non-surgical and surgical techniques over several months, we slowly got her right lower lid back to a better position. It took lots of time, endless patience and full trust in the process. It’s still not perfect, but now she finally feels confident to go back to her normal life ❤️

It is understandably appealing that cosmetic procedures and surgeries abroad are often much cheaper compared to the US. But patients often forget that it’s not just about the surgery itself, but the initial consultation, informed consent (including fully understanding potential risks) and post-op recovery/care that are also equally important. Even with thorough research and vetting, you can’t guarantee that your surgery is going to go perfectly, whether abroad or in the US. However, should complications arise, at least you can continue follow-up with your original surgeon who should be prepared to handle such complications.
