*Upate- she’s home now and everything went well. There was a change in the plan and she ended up having a revision on the left and the right side.

She’s ready for #12. Still in her Healing Era.

Sarah had a good night (by hospital standards) and even got some sleep. The new antibiotic is working its magic, and the infectious disease doctor is happy with how things look this morning, so Sarah is making a quick escape today! She’s already planning a stop by Chick fil A for lunch- a sure sign that she is on the mend. I know a sweet little boy is going to be over the moon when his mama comes home this afternoon.

In true Sarah fashion, her surgery was a little spicy. What I didn’t realize when I updated last night was that she had aspirated during surgery. She has pneumonia in her left lung and the culture taken during surgery appears to be growing the same type of staph she had in January. They are changing up some of her antibiotics and keeping her another night while everything settles down. We are thinking she’ll be going home tomorrow.

Update: Sarah is out of surgery and headed to recovery. She won’t be excited a out the two drains, but everything went well and she should be back to her room in an hour or two. The surgeon said the fluid in her chest cavity was cloudy, so Sarah was right; there was definitely an infection setting in.

Off to surgery to have both implants removed. She was in good spirits. We were thrilled that her surgeon came in on a Saturday night that he was not on call to do the procedure himself.in

Sarah’s surgery was scheduled for 10:30 this morning, but after running labs, they decided it would be best if she had some more time with the IV antibiotics before going to the OR. She’s now on the schedule for 6:00 this evening and will be staying the night. With the infection already there, she will definitely have to be explanted. While disappointing, the most important thing is for her body to be able to recover as quickly as possible with no further complications. Removing the implant is the best option.

Our girl keeps everyone on their toes. Unfortunately, the fluid continued to collect around the implant and when Sarah began feeling sick and the redness increased, it was clear that her body was struggling to keep infection at bay. She had to return to Northside last night for stronger antibiotics and another surgery. We’re not sure yet exactly when that surgery will be or exactly what it will entail, but it may be another explant. All the prayers and good vibes appreciated.

Recovery from this last surgery was going really well- until it wasn’t. Sarah had to make an unplanned trip to see her surgeon today after she noticed swelling, tenderness, and redness on one side. It was reminiscent of her early warning signs of sepsis in January. They drained over 100 cc’s of fluid off in the office and have started her on antibiotics. We are all thankful that her doctors are accessible and she was able to be seen as soon as we could get her there. Their care has been outstanding. The jury is still
out as to whether or not she’ll get to keep the implant. The coming days will be a good indicator. We’re praying that the rest of the fluid clears and no infection sets in.

Another surgery was not on our January 2025 Bingo card… but neither was staph, a week in the hospital, or her last surgery. Unfortunately, the staph infection wasn’t as responsive to antibiotics as we’d hoped and Sarah is at Northside for an explant procedure this morning. She’s a trooper.

Here we go! It’s been a week since this adventure began and it’s time to say peace out, Northside ✌️. Coach Emmer is going home representing her swim team who has a prelims/finals meet in Adairsville today.

Today has been a much better day with Sarah feeling a little bit more like herself. Her team is still working to find the right broad spectrum antibiotic cocktail for her. As the cultures have come in they’ve found that she has a staph infection along with the strep. Surgery is scheduled for 10am tomorrow, but the plan has changed a bit and she won’t be going home like we’d hoped. If you think about it in the morning, please send prayers and good vibes this way.
