There are many fundraising events that support breast cancer research, prevention and early detection. One of them is the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun that is hosted by the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI). This yearly event raises funds for breast cancer patients and to help spread breast cancer awareness. The event also offers free registration for all breast cancer survivors.

Last year, the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun had nearly 1,000 participants. It featured different activities like Zumba and yoga classes for those that did not want to walk or run. This year the event was held in August, and because of COVID-19, the organizers made the event a little different. They went virtual! The idea was basically that teams get to choose what they do and when they do it. There were a variety of exciting breast cancer awareness events like the Flock of Flamingos. All funds raised from the Pink Ribbon Run & Fun event will go directly to local Wyoming programs that increase breast cancer education, fund early detection screening, and support breast cancer survivors.

Breast cancer occurs not only in women but also in men. Many are aware of breast cancer; however, there are still those who don’t know that men can also be diagnosed as well. Men’s breast tissue can still develop cancer cells even though they do not have mammary glands. According to statistics, 1 out of every 100 breast cancer diagnosis is in a man. Male breast cancer is more common in older men, but it can occur at any age.

The signs and symptoms of male breast cancer are similar to women. But usually, male breast cancer is detected as a large lump below the ni**le and ar**la. Men diagnosed at an earlier stage will have a better chance of survival and have different treatment options. Surgery to remove breast tumors is the most common treatment. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy may also be recommended depending on the patient’s condition.

We should be aware that male breast cancer is possible and early detection reduces the risk of a fatal diagnosis or outcome. Anyone noticing anything unusual with their breasts should contact a doctor immediately.

Here's a breast cancer survivor's food plan. This list was adopted from the American Cancer Society's Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Survivors.

1. An ideal daily serving of fruits and vegetables is 2 ½ cups. This is very crucial to avoid carcinogens.

2. Limit red meat and processed meats.

3. Choose whole-grain bread and cereals, and grains like quinoa, millet, and brown rice.

4. Limit alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and for men, no more than two drinks.

5. Avoid "bad" trans fats found in microwave popcorn, donuts, poultry skin, margarine, fatty deli meat, and others. Check every label.

6. Eat “good” fats found in avocados, olives, olive oil and canola oil. Again, check every label.

7. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly, even a small amount helps and you can slowly work up to longer times.

Have you ever wondered how pink ribbons came to symbolize breast cancer awareness? A breast cancer survivor Charlotte Haley started distributing thousands of cards with peach-colored breast cancer awareness ribbons at a local supermarket. The editor-in-chief of Self Magazine, Alexandra Penney, heard about this and proposed a plan to promote it. Charlotte turned it down because she thought Self Magazine's proposal was too commercial. Because of legal reasons, Alexandra Penney and Self Magazine were unable to use Charlotte's peach ribbon, so they decided to go pink.

Cancer researchers continue to look for ways to fight breast cancer. Recently, they have discovered the power of combining or mixing two or more drugs. This has been found effective in combating the heterogeneous nature of tumors and has helped a significant number of breast cancer patients go into remission.

Researchers from the University of Helsinki combined a diabetes drug, Metformin and a BCL-2 protein inhibitor, Venetoclax. According to senior study investigator Juha Klefstrom, this drug cocktail “exploits specific metabolic vulnerabilities that high levels of MYC create in tumor cells.” It also killed and blocked breast tumor cells in cultures. Tests were conducted with breast cancer tissue donated by breast cancer patients, and the drug combination was shown to effectively kill breast cancer tissues. However, this treatment had to be done continuously because once it was stopped, the tumor cells were able to grow back.

In the midst of this pandemic, breast cancer patients and those undergoing treatments have an extra layer of fear. Read about what scientific director Dr. Judy Garber at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation said about breast cancer and COVID-19.

During these uncertain times, everyone’s wondering what they should do to stay healthy and how to protect themselves from COVID-19 (coronavirus). Many of us have the same questions on our minds: What are the symptoms of COVID-19? Who is at risk of contracting COVID-19? Should I wear a mask?

Lack of knowledge about breast cancer symptoms is a major factor in the increase of cases. According to studies, one in eight women develop breast cancer without even realizing it. Early awareness and detection can save lives, and one way is through yearly mammogram screening.

Mammograms can detect breast cancer even before a woman can feel or see any symptoms. It captures digital images of the breast to quickly locate tumors that cannot be detected with a simple breast examination. It can also determine if any symptoms being experienced, like lumps or ni**le discharge, are due to breast cancer. With mammograms, patients can find out earlier if there are changes in their breasts. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services and the American College of Radiology encourage women over 40 to undergo yearly mammogram screening.

Covers for Life supports breast cancer awareness and screening. Visit our website at https://coversforlife.com/ to learn how we continue to promote breast cancer awareness.

Living in this imperfect world, we can only hope for a disease-free life. About 12 percent of women in the United States will develop some form of breast cancer in their lifetime. In 2020, there are roughly 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 48,350 non-invasive cases expected to be diagnosed. With these staggering numbers, it is clear that breast cancer is something that we should all take very seriously.

There are many testimonials from women who have experienced and survived breast cancer. Some say the disease has opened their eyes to self-exploration, has inspired them to help others and give back more, and has given them a new perspective in life. Surviving breast cancer led them to a more positive outlook and realize the importance of each day.

Marenda Taylor, 44, diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, is a living testimony of how this life-threatening disease can transform people. In 2014, she discovered a lump in her breast, yet became passive about undergoing any treatment. She experienced hair loss, loss of taste, and her body grew numb. The treatments caused her to lose her senses, leaving her with a sense of void.

Marenda was a busy woman, working for the California State Legislature. She had no time for anything that would stop her from giving her all to her work. But breast cancer made her stop, take a step back, and breathe in through the process of her life's most significant transition.

We can either let our circumstances make or break us. A life that's worth living is a life learned in the darkest and most challenging time. Breast cancer does not have to make you weak - it can transform you inside and out.
