“My life has come to a full circle and it’s a magical moment.” Meet, Dr. Ozlem Bilen, DOM faculty member and soon-to-be Emory University Hospital's Section Chief of Cardiology, effective this September.

Dr. Bilen's appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold this esteemed position. In a recent interview with Emory News Center, she reflects on her remarkable journey as she recounts her upbringing in Turkey, where the presence of female doctors in the medical field was scarce, to training under Anita Deswal, MD, (Baylor College of Medicine), during her residency who deeply inspired her. Bilen now holds a position similar to that of Dr. Deswal, marking a symbolic "full circle" moment as she embarks on the next phase of her career.

🎉We're proud to share that DOM faculty member and interventional cardiologist, Chandan Devireddy MD MBA (Emory Cardiology), and the Emory Heart team recently made medical history. On November 16, Dr. Devireddy, his patient, Olivia, and his team at Emory University Hospital Midtown successfully performed a groundbreaking minimally invasive procedure using the newly FDA-approved Paradise ultrasound balloon.

This procedure, called renal denervation, aims to lower the patient's severely high blood pressure without the need for additional medication. Although Emory has been studying this procedure for over a decade, it was unavailable outside of clinical trials until now. Olivia has recovered smoothly and was able to return home on the same day of the procedure.

Our Story

Cardiology is entering an exciting new era in which advances will be made in clinical cardiology, basic cardiovascular research, and interventional and noninterventional technologies. As classical cardiovascular disease syndromes become better understood in the mechanistic terms of modern molecular and cellular biology, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to cardiovascular disease will continue to change dramatically in the coming years. The Emory Division of Cardiology will continue as a leader in bringing about these changes with internationally recognized expertise in many relevant disciplines. Of particular note is Emory's record in clinical cardiology established by Drs. R. Bruce Logue and J. Willis Hurst; in interventional cardiology established by Dr. Andreas Gruentzig; and in vascular biology and medicine by the research group established by Dr. R. Wayne Alexander in 1988.
