This is so interesting to read....tells how the Go Team started and how therapy dogs can help in so many ways. Nancy is our wonderful trainer.

Petting a dog can offer a victim or survivor physical comfort at a time when it is much needed. Many do not want a human touch.

Last Friday we got to go back and see our friends at McGarity Elementary! They remembered Cody from last time. We were in a small classroom and a teacher would bring in two or three of the autistic kids at a time and let them get to see Cody. It is always so special. I was sitting in a chair close by so my pictures aren’t at the best angle but I hope you can see how special it was. Cody didn’t even mind getting his foot sat on or even one kid seeing how soft Cody’s tongue was! Lol. When we were leaving a third grade classroom invited us in and probably 20 or so kids surrounded Cody where he received lots of petting. They loved it when we gave each of them Cody’s trading cards. Oh and look closely and you might see the black bag Cody carried around his neck filled with candy that was given to the kids and teachers. You’ll see pictures from the beginning with Cody waiting to go into the school to watching for the kids to come in to the classroom. There was one child crying in the hallway who initially didn’t want to come in but came in to see Cody and then wiped away his tears and ended up smiling while petting him. They loved Cody’s Santa costume too. It’s always a blessing to go in and see them and we look forward to going back!

Cody and I are going back to see Miss Claire and all her kids at McGarity Elementary later this week. We have a surprise to show them too!

I realized that some may not know that I, Vicki Turner, am the person posting about this journey and am blessed to be working with this amazing dog, Cody. God sent him to us last year after our first Aussie, Maggie, passed away. We went all the way to Missouri to get him. We have been in training with Sit Means Sit in Douglasville and then went through training and testing and passed (yippee) in February with the worldwide Go Team Therapy Dogs. Therapy dogs go into schools, hospitals, courts, cancer treatment areas, fall festivals, tragic events and so many more areas to provide comfort and love and especially to those hurting and in need. Yesterday as we were with those sweet autistic kids there was one who laid on the floor in a fetal type position face down for a long time and wouldn’t come see Cody. He turned over on his back and laid there for a while. I got permission to take Cody over and let him lay down beside the boy. It warmed my heart so much to see the boy reach over and then to see his hand start to touch and play with Cody’s feet. I am anxious to see how things progress as we go back to see them and next time they will be able to read to Cody. Thanks for watching our progress!

Cody and I were so excited to be able to go to Miss Claire’s autistic kids’ class at McGarity Elementary School today. It was so special to see them with Cody. We are looking forward to going back and visiting them again. Maybe Miss Claire can get more Cody kisses!
