Why does sleep matter?

When we are tired, we do not feel like exercising! The quantity and quality of our sleep can positively impact our health in several ways.

First, it improves the body’s regulation of hormones (testosterone and insulin-like growth factor 1) helping the muscles recover after exercise-induced damage.

Second, it improves the body’s regulation of the hormones (leptin and ghrelin), which allows you to feel more in control of your appetite.

Third, when you are well rested you have the energy you need to push yourself while exercising…rather than just dragging yourself through the motions.

Lastly, sleep improves various aspects of decision-making, innovative thinking, and memory. This helps us as we strive to make other health-improving changes in our lives, such as eating better and exercising consistently.

IMPORTANT ADVICE - DO NOT ADD FRUIT to your shake unless you are trying to GAIN weight. We are trying to CONTROL CARBS!

When you blend and liquify fruits you are making a sugary drink. If you read the nutrition facts on juices, they are very high in sugar and carbohydrates. In fact, some juices have more sugar and carbs than sodas.

And don’t think, “I love how a banana makes my shake taste so creamy. I need to add banana.” DO NOT DO IT! One banana has 27 carbs, WHICH WILL SPIKE YOU GLUCOSE AND INSULIN. If you want a creamy shake add ½ of a ripe avocado.

In the second and third week, if you are not a diabetic and want to use ¼ cup of low sugar fruit (berries) from time to time, it would be ok.

There are 16 shake recipes in the Complete Recipe Guide that don't contain fruit (pages 1 - 16). Plenty of options for your tastes!

Sweating during exercise is a sign that you are exerting yourself and it is the way our body helps to regulate our temperature.

Some research shows it helps to rid the body of toxins taking the burden off your kidneys and your liver. Sweating, and then rehydrating by drinking plenty of water, can lower the risk of kidney stones and improves our immune system. It unclogs pores, so our skin glows after a good sweat and besides helping with weight loss, you will improve your mood.
